"My Life With the Walter Boys" boss unpacks all those season 2 finale cliffhangers: 'It's a huge deal'

Courtesy of Netflix This article contains spoilers for theMy Life With the Walter Boysseason 2 finale. My Life With the Walter Boyswill never be the same after that shocking season 2 finale. Netflix's teen drama blew everything up for the love triangle in the episode's final moments, as Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) finally admitted to Cole (Noah LaLonde) that she's in love with him after he confessed his feelings for her. But his younger brother — and her secret boyfriend — Alex (Ashby Gentry) overheard their entire passionate confession. As if that wasn't enough emotional torment for the three teens, they were immediately interrupted by the revelation that something happened to the boys' father George (Marc Blucas). While they didn't find out any specific details about his fate, an ambulance was already speeding towards the house. Courtesy of Netflix "We ended season 1 on a pretty big cliffhanger, so of course we wanted to be bigger and better in season 2," showrunner Melanie Halsall tellsEntertainment Weekly. "I really wanted to give all the characters a huge thing to deal with in those last moments. Jackie's had her fling with Alex, and things have come to a head with Cole where they can't ignore their feelings for each other anymore. But because this series has been about identity and family, I also wanted to blow a big hole in the whole family dynamic as well at the end, not just in the trio." Thankfully,My Life With the Walter Boyshas already been renewed for a third season (currently in production), so fans will eventually get some closure for all these cliffhangers. But the showrunner warns that the fallout will impact every character moving forward. "I wanted to blow the whole thing apart in ways that we weren't expecting and in ways that are going to have huge repercussions, and the characters will have to deal with those repercussions for quite some time," Halsall says. Below, the showrunner talks with EW about that shocking finale ending and what fans can expect when the show returns for season 3. Courtesy of Netflix ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: We have no idea what happened with George, but needing an ambulance isn't a good sign. What can you tease about what happened and his fate going into season 3? MELANIE HALSALL:I really can't say, I'm so sorry. I hate to leave you hanging. It's a huge deal and there will be a lot of fallout from what happened at the end of season 2 throughout season 3. Is Marc Blucas still in the cast for season 3? Am I allowed to answer that question?[A representative for the show declined to comment on Blucas' season 3 status.] David Brown/Netflix Jackie's confession to Cole was intense. Has she always known how deep her feelings are for him, or is she just now realizing it as she's making her speech? It is a bit of both. She's been avoiding those feelings for him for a long time. Her guilt over what happened at the end of season 1, giving into her feelings, a character like Jackie is going to double down in the opposite direction, because she didn't feel like she behaved the correct way at that moment. She carries a lot of guilt and feelings from that moment, and she comes back to Silver Falls really wanting to cement her life in this family and reintegrating herself into this community. She decided that's where her life is going to be, and so part of that is not blowing this family up, not upsetting Alex or anyone else in the family or even Cole. The only way she can do that is by denying her feelings. She and Cole decide to become friends, but when he changes after what he sees at the end of episode 9, when he is pushing her away, that's when she realizes how much she feels for him. When she confronts him on that and he confesses to her, she can't not reciprocate at that point because this has been bubbling up inside her the entire show. It's a lot easier for him to say because he's got his heart on his sleeve where Jackie's concerned. But for Jackie, that confession is pulled out of her as she says, "I love you. Are we done? Can I go now?" Because it took such a lot for her to say that, and it's almost like, "If I confess that I love you, can we then try and move forward?" Of course for Jackie, a confession of love is then followed by, "Let's move on." She just confessed that she loved him, this is thestartof something. If they hadn't been interrupted, first by Alex and then by the discovery of George's health crisis, would they have kissed? Whatever she decides to do next is going to be difficult. Someone's going to get hurt. Despite the awfulness of those two moments, there's an element for her of relief that she doesn't have to either move forward with Cole that in that moment or tell him she's not going to, or go and tell Alex that she's [in love with Cole]. There's lots of things going on for her so an interruption is a blessed relief for her. Cole just heard Jackie's confession. Alex also heard it. What is going through both of these brothers' minds in that moment? These brothers have been at each other's throats for such a long time, and in season 2 they've come to this uneasy understanding where they have tried to put the events of the past behind them. Wrapped up in that is also, for Cole, guilt, understanding that he's hurt his brother again by hearing what he's just said. Cole's one of the most honorable, if not the most honorable, character in our show. He takes on everybody's feelings and hurt and problems and he never throws anybody under the bus or blames anyone else for his problems, but he just takes all that emotion on himself and pushes it down inside. So for Cole to hurt his brother again, even by Alex just overhearing what he said, let alone what Jackie said, that's going to be really hard for him. For Alex, earlier on in the season he does say that he knew there was something between them. He's not stupid, but he's been denying his feelings and knowledge there as well. So hearing that will be a real turning point for him. Whether he'll be hurt, of course that'll be very difficult for him, but it might be what he needs to hear. Courtesy of Netflix Why did you want to explore a relationship between Jackie and Alex again in season 2? Many of us have been in a situation where we have maybe made a decision pertaining to another person we've been in love with that we might not have made [otherwise]. Someone does something we don't want, but we take them back. You can't get over them, so you give a relationship another try. You really want it to work even if the smart thing to do is to walk away. I think that's really relatable. Alex comes back from his rodeo school with his glow-up, and he's very popular with the girls now, but Jackie's the one that sees him and how vulnerable he is and that underneath is still the sweet Alex that we knew in season 1. Teenagers often do change physically very quickly and we try on different personalities, and a lot of that is about exploring who you actually are. His relationship with Jackie is part and parcel of all that — it's him trying on a personality, wanting this to be the right thing, wanting to forgive this girl that he really has very strong feelings for and wants it to work out. And Jackie also wants it to work out — Alex is the perfect boyfriend for her on paper. He's her safe space, he forgives her, and he's so sweet to her when she's at the most vulnerable. And they are attracted to each other, especially more so after Alex's glow-up. At the heart of it is they both just really want it to be the right thing. David Brown/Netflix What can you tease about where this love triangle is heading in season 3? Our show is a love triangle, obviously, and I don't know if those can ever really be resolved. Someone's always going to get their heart broken. I can't say anything about season 3, but I will say that we delve deeper into the lives and loves of our characters in new and interesting ways. The finale also hinted that Alex might finally be realizing he has feelings for Kiley — of course, just as she begins a relationship with someone else. How will that be explored next season? Kylie has really been in love with Alex forever, and Alex has never really seen it before. It takes him seeing her, as it often does, with somebody else taking interest in her for him to start to understand that. Alex, in regards to all his relationships, has probably some growing up to do and some self-reflection to do. It's going to get very interesting.
