Jillian was shot by police during an altercation outside the couple's LA home on April 8 when a hit-and-run incident led to a manhunt for three suspects in northeast Los Angeles County. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers tracked one of the suspects to a house backyard neighboring the Shiner's home and found Jillian armed with a handgun before an officer shot her. Jillian, who police say had no involvement in the hit-and-run and was standing in her own yard, was later taken into custody and treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Officers shot Shriner after she allegedly refused to drop the nine-millimeter handgun that she then pointed at them, according to Los Angeles police. She was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder before later being charged with assault and negligent discharge of a firearm. Instead of facing jailtime, a judge ruled that Jillian would undergo a two-year mental health diversion program, her attorney, Hilary Potashner, confirmed. "We appreciate the DA carefully reviewing this matter and believe this resolution is fair," Potashner told USA TODAY in a statement Friday, Sept. 26. The county district attorney's office will dismiss the charges upon completion of the program, theLos Angeles Timesreported. Shriner, also known as Jillian Lauren, is the author of several books across multiple genres including her 2010 memoir "Some Girls: My Life in a Harem," which recounted her experience staying in the harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah, brother of the Sultan of Brunei. "At eighteen, Jillian Lauren was an NYU theater school dropout with a tip about an upcoming audition," the book's synopsis explains. "The 'casting director' told her that a rich businessman in Singapore would pay pretty American girls $20,000 if they stayed for two weeks to spice up his parties. Soon, Jillian found herself on a plane to Borneo, where she would spend the next eighteen months in the harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah, youngest brother of the Sultan of Brunei." In 2011, she published a novel titled "Pretty," about a woman left scarred by a car accident, before later publishing another memoir "Everything You Ever Wanted" in 2015 chronicling her experierience adopting an Ethiopian child with special needs alongside her husband.
