Unlike Thanksgiving football games, which technically predates the NFL itself to 1920 and are a yearly tradition, annual football games on Christmas are relatively new. In comparison, the NFL only began consistently scheduling at least one Christmas Day game in 2020.
NFL commissionerRoger Goodellconfirmed during a 2025 interview onThe Pat McAfee Showthat "I think we will clearly have three games every year, adding "a lot of teams now want to play on Christmas, 'cause it's a great platform."
The Kansas City Chiefs had previously expressed interest in becoming a Christmas Day mainstay player, like the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys are on Thanksgiving, but Goodell shared "I don't think we'll do that, I think we'll continue to rotate them."
Continuing the tradition which began in 2024, each of the six teams playing in the 2025 Christmas Day games will sport a holiday-inspired jersey patch during their week 16 and Christmas Day games.
The design, featuring two candy canes crossed behind the NFL shield with a 2025 underneath, wasrevealed on Dec. 10
