The Untold Story of the Lost Opening to 'I Love Lucy'New Foto - The Untold Story of the Lost Opening to 'I Love Lucy'

For generations, reruns of I Love Lucy have kept Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in living rooms everywhere. Even people who never sat down to watch an episode know the iconic opening: a heart floating on velvet with the show's title written across it. It's one of television's most familiar images, almost as lasting as Lucy's wide-eyed reactions or Ricky's exasperated "Lucy, you got some 'splaining to do!" But that famous heart wasn't always part of the show. In fact, the real original opening has been missing from reruns for decades. The reason why says a lot about how television used to work—and how it changed forever. The first season of I Love Lucy didn't begin with a floating heart at all. Instead, audiences were greeted by animated versions of Lucy and Ricky. The two cartoon stick figures danced around a giant pack of Philip Morris cigarettes, occasionally climbing down ropes or pulling stunts to grab attention. The scene even came with an enthusiastic voice-over proudly announcing, "Philip Morris presents the Lucille Ball–Desi Arnaz Show!" That animated opener wasn't a random creative decision. In the early 1950s, television shows were often directly tied to a single sponsor. For I Love Lucy, that sponsor was Philip Morris, and the opening sequence doubled as an advertisement. The animation itself came from William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who would later create Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, and other cartoon classics. So why don't most viewers today remember Lucy swinging on cigarette packs? Part of the answer is sponsorship. Philip Morris dropped out in 1955, and the show no longer needed an animated ad attached to every episode. By the late 1950s, I Love Lucy had already proven itself as one of the biggest hits in television history, so CBS began rerunning the series with a new, more neutral opening. That's when the velvet heart appeared. The other part of the story came years later. In 1970, the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act banned television ads for tobacco products. By that point, reruns were already using the heart design, but the law ensured the original cigarette-themed animations would never return to mainstream broadcasts. Image via Photo Images/Jupiter Images Even the music we now associate with Lucy had its own strange path. The signature I Love Lucy theme didn't appear in the very beginning. Instead, season one used classical music, a section of Ferde Grofé's Grand Canyon Suite, over the animated sponsor sequence. During the second season, the jaunty melody we all know was written by Eliot Daniel, though he asked to remain uncredited at first due to his contract with another studio. Only later did his name appear, thus allowing him to collect royalties for the rest of his life. The theme even had lyrics written for a season three episode where Ricky sings "I Love Lucy" to celebrate Lucy's birthday. That version never became the standard opening, but it showed how deeply the tune had already lodged itself in pop culture.

Mathew Tsang/Getty Shania Twain revealed that her fans have given her a "newfound appreciation" for her song "You're Still the One" She and her ex-husband, music producer Robert "Mutt" Lange, wrote the Grammy-winning song together A seventh album from Twain is currently in the works, which will feature "storytelling" Shania Twainstill thinks this song is the one, despite how it came to be. Speaking withETalk in a TikTok videooriginally shared on YouTube on Aug. 11, the country star, 60, reflected on the 1997 song "You're Still the One," which she wrote with her ex-husband, music producerRobert "Mutt" Lange. "Well, I'm not just saying this because it seems obvious, but 'You're Still the One' really is one of my favorites to do live," Twain began. "I've gone through quite a few stages with that song of, not really even wanting to sing it live for a while, just thinking, 'Well, okay, I'm divorced now, does it really mean what it used to mean when I wrote it?' " Never miss a story — sign up forPEOPLE's free daily newsletterto stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. However, Twain now has a "newfound appreciation" for the song again. "I have for a while." "It's mostly fans, fans love it, they want to hear it. It means so much to them in so many ways. They're either getting married to it, or have been married to it, or had an anniversary, or a friendship, or whatever it is. "It's more the meaning that it is, or that it represents, to everybody else that makes it so meaningful to me again," added Twain. The Queen of Country Pop also mentioned that she is "in the middle of making" a seventh album. "It's going to be different than maybe what anyone is expecting. There's a lot of storytelling in this album," she teased. Terry Wyatt/Getty "You're Still the One" was nominated for four Grammy Awards in 1999 and took home two: Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. It was also nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. It spent 42 weeks on theBillboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 1 on May 2, 1998, for two weeks. Twain and Lange, 76,were married from 1993 until 2008. They share24-year-old son Eja. She is currently married toFrédéric Thiébaud, with whom she tied the knot on New Year's Day in 2011. Twain spoke to PEOPLE in Februaryabout being "put in a box" by the music industry, by fans and executives. "If I feel like I'm being put in a box, I start to panic," Twain said at the time. "I run in any direction I can because I don't want to be contained. I have to be able to find my own way." "Sometimes I'm not even sure where I'm going myself. How can somebody else tell me that, right? So I need the freedom to explore and to land wherever that exploration takes me," added Twain. Mathew Tsang/Getty Twain also said that it's "really great to see" artists go beyond their typical genre of music. "I'm always championing anybody that does things that are unexpected by the industry, or unexpected by the audience." "They may not have seen it coming, but the artist does have a sense of where they want to go exploring, and I really think it's wonderful that they do, that they explore it, and they take it to whatever limit interests them." Proud Boys members call for Bondi's ouster for trying to dismiss $100M lawsuitNew Foto - Proud Boys members call for Bondi's ouster for trying to dismiss $100M lawsuit

Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Justice Department are facing blowback over their effort to block alawsuitfrom members of the far-right Proud Boys, who are seeking financial reimbursement for their criminal cases and imprisonment for offenses stemming from theJan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot. The Proud Boys Jan. 6 rioters, who met in a social media "X spaces" gathering last month, are calling for Bondi's resignation, after the Justice Department filed a motion in federal court in Florida last week, asking a judge to dismiss a civil lawsuit filed by Enrique Tarrio, Zachary Rehl, Domenic Pezzola and other Proud Boys. All the men wereimprisonedfor their roles in the riot before President Trumppardonedthem on the day he wasinauguratedfor his second term. The Proud Boys' lawsuit seeks more than $100 million in damages and alleges the men suffered "A parade of horribles: egregious and systemic abuse of the legal system and the United States Constitution to punish and oppress political allies of President Trump, by any and all means necessary, legal, or illegal." "Through the use of evidence tampering, witness intimidation, violations of attorney-client privilege, and placing spies to report on trial strategy, the government got its fondest wish of imprisoning the J6 Defendants," the lawsuit claims. In a filing on Aug. 25, the Justice Departmentrespondedthat the Jan. 6 defendants had not yet exhausted administrative remedies before they filed suit and also argued the U.S. enjoys sovereign immunity from such claims. An attorney for Jan. 6 defendants sent a statement to CBS News, saying, "Motions to dismiss are a common reaction to a civil complaint, and we anticipated that the attorney the government assigned to the case would make such a motion.  We are confident that the Court will see that the Federal government's outrageous treatment of my clients justifies allowing the suit to continue. " In their publicly posted X spaces meeting video, Jan. 6 defendants and supporters blistered the Justice Department for opposing the Proud Boys' civil challenge. Isaac Thomas, a pardoned Jan. 6 defendant from Michigan who participated in the meeting, said, "Unfortunately, Pam Bondi's DOJ seems to be advocating for the same things that the Biden regime was advocating for. A long time ago, I joined the call of Trump supporters saying that Pam Bondi needs to step down." Thomas said the Jan. 6 defendants "have been dumped out." Mark McCloskey, an attorney who said he is seeking financial payments forCapitol riotdefendants, said in the video he was "very disappointed" in the Justice Department's challenge to the Proud Boys lawsuit. He said if the Justice Department opposes other legal challenges seeking restitution or financial awards for Jan. 6 defendants, "It's going to make our lives very difficult." He predicted more legal challenges would be coming, as some of the more than 1,500 Jan. 6 defendants pursue financial compensation, and he referenced "hundreds" of people who could be impacted. The Justice Department did not have an immediate comment to the recent Jan. 6 defendants' online meeting. The civil lawsuit filed by Proud Boys members also alleges malicious prosecution and violation of Fourth Amendment protections, claims that the Justice Department rebutted in its response to the suit. In their Aug. 25 filing, the Justice Department argued the Proud Boys defendants failed to sufficiently demonstrate the case was "malicious" and that their constitutional rights had been violated. The 17-page filing from the department did not address whether the men had been rightfully or wrongfully convicted by a jury. The Proud Boys also allege harsh conditions in jail in their lawsuit, and it referenced the language used in President Trump's pardon order for Capitol insurrection defendants, which said, "This proclamation ends a grave national injustice that has been perpetrated upon the American people over the last four years and is a process of national reconciliation." An attorney who filed the suit did not immediately respond to requests for comment from CBS News. A Justice Department attorney who filed the motion to dismiss the Jan. 6 defendants' lawsuit has been harshly criticized by name on social media. In one instance, the attorney was referred to as being one of the "swamp rats." News of the Justice Department court filing also triggered a wave of critical comments about the department in a weekend social media post by amedia outletaligned with Trump supporterMike Lindell, who made baseless claims about the 2020 election. (Reuters) -Ukraine will never agree to legalise the Russian occupation of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and an immediate withdrawal of Russian troops is the only way to guarantee safety there, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday. A ministry statement made no direct reference to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's statement during a visit to China that Moscow was ready to cooperate with the United States at the plant, seized in the first weeks after Moscow's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. "The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is and will remain an integral part of the sovereign territory of Ukraine. Any attempts by Russia to question this fact are legally null and void and politically pointless," the ministry said. "The only way to restore nuclear safety is the immediate and complete withdrawal of Russian military and other personnel from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant." China's Xi, flanked by Putin and Kim, hosts military parade in defiance of WestNew Foto - China's Xi, flanked by Putin and Kim, hosts military parade in defiance of West

By Laurie Chen BEIJING (Reuters) -China kicked off its largest-ever military parade on Wednesday, a show of its growing firepower and geopolitical clout as President Xi Jinping seeks to cast Beijing as the custodian of a post-U.S. international order. Flanked by Russia's Vladimir Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong Un, Xi was shown on television strolling up a red carpet to take his seat for the lavish event at Tiananmen Square to mark 80 years since Japan's defeat at the end of World War Two. Wearing a suit in the style of those worn by former leader Mao Zedong, Xi earlier greeted around two dozen largely non-western leaders in attendance, including Indonesia's Prabowo Subianto, who made a surprise appearance despite widespread protests at home. He was shown saying "Nice to meet you" and "Welcome to China" in English. The highly choreographed "Victory Day" spectacle comes as U.S. President Donald Trump's "America First" stance and trade wars have strained Washington's long-standing alliances. Asked whether he sees the parade as a challenge to the United States on Tuesday, Trump said he didn't and reiterated his "very good relationship" with Xi. "China needs us much more than we need them," he added. More than 50,000 spectators at Tiananmen Square packed into stands in Tiananmen Square awaiting the 70-minute showcase of aerial displays, marching troops as well as cutting-edge military equipment such as hypersonic missiles, unmanned drones and outfitted tanks. Major roads and schools have been closed in Beijing for the parade, the culmination of weeks of painstaking security preparations and midnight rehearsals. Xi will review the troops lined up in formation before delivering a keynote speech atop the Gate of Heavenly Peace in Beijing, where a portrait of China's late Chairman Mao Zedong overlooks Tiananmen Square. VISION FOR NEW GLOBAL ORDER Xi has cast World War Two as a major turning point in the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation", in which it overcame the humiliation of Japan's invasion to become an economic powerhouse. He is expected to highlight China and Soviet Russia's triumph in defeating fascism and its role upholding the postwar international order during his speech at the ceremony. Earlier this week, Xi unveiled his vision of a new global order at a regional security summit, calling for unity against "hegemonism and power politics", a thinly veiled swipe at the United States and Trump's sweeping tariffs aimed at both friend and foe. Putin has already used the occasion to seal deeper energy deals with China, while the gathering offers Kim an opportunity to gain implicit support for his banned nuclear weapons. Kim, debuting in his first major multilateral event, will become the first North Korean to attend a Chinese military parade in 66 years. His daughter Ju Ae, whom South Korean intelligence consider his most likely successor, is making her international debut after years of being seen next to Kim at major domestic events. Nothing has been left to chance for the milestone gathering. Local governments nationwide have mobilised tens of thousands of volunteers and Communist Party members to monitor for any signs of potential unrest ahead of the parade, estimates based on online recruitment notices show. "President Xi will use this opportunity to showcase how the military is clearly, unmistakably behind him," said Wen-Ti Sung, fellow at the Atlantic Council's Global China Hub.
