Sharyn Alfonsi says CBS story dispute is behind her '60 Minutes' exit

Longtime "60 Minutes" correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi's time at CBS News is over after nearly two decades, and she said an editorial dispute over a December story on the Trump administration's enforcement of immigration procedures is the reason why.

USA TODAY

The TV journalist's contract with the network expired over the weekend, following nearly 20 years at CBS News and more than a decade at "60 Minutes," she confirmed in a statement shared with theLos Angeles TimesandPeople.

"Following an intense editorial dispute over our CECOT story, repeated attempts by my representation to establish a path forward were met with absolute silence from network executives," she said in a statement, the LA Times reported. "The message could not be clearer: my time at 60 Minutes is apparently over."

USA TODAY reached out to representatives for CBS News and Alfonsi for comment.

Sharyn Alfonsi accused network of pulling story in 'political' decision

The segment at the center of Alfonsi's reported comments, "Inside CECOT," examined the infamous anti-terrorism prison in El Salvador. Human rights groups condemned the maximum-security facility for its dangerous conditions, and the prison hasserved as a symbolin PresidentDonald Trump's controversialimmigration enforcement.

A CBS spokesperson said the story was halted because it needed additional reporting. The segment eventually aired on Jan. 18 with added comments from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, details of the criminal records of those deported, and additional reporting on one with tattoos, the network said in a statement shared with USA TODAY.

Alfonsi, 53, said in an email to multiple news outlets, including Reuters, that she learned that CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss cut the segment not because of an editorial decision but "a political one."

"Our story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices," she wrote in an email, People reported. "It is factually correct."

Alfonsi said viewers were expecting the story in December after days of promotion and that the "public will correctly identify this as corporate censorship," according to a note she sent to "60 Minutes" staffers,Yashar Alireported. "We are trading 50 years of 'Gold Standard' reputation for a single week of political quiet."

Sam Elliott Says His “Landman” Character's Frailty Is 'Very True' to His Own 'Hard Life'

Sam Elliott says his Landman character T.L. Norris' struggles with aging and physical decline are “very true” to his own life

NEED TO KNOW

  • The actor, 81, reflected on the emotional pool scene in season 2, in which T.L. opens up to his son Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) about watching his body fail him

  • Despite six decades in Hollywood, Elliott also revealed he’s still learning from his costars

Sam Elliottknows a thing or two aboutplaying hard-living characters— and these days, he says the role feels increasingly familiar.

The Oscar-nominated actor, 81, opened up about his role as T.L. Norris in the hit dramaLandman, revealing that some of his character’sstruggles with aging and physical declinehit particularly close to home.

Elliott reflected on one of season 2’s most heart-wrenching storylines, in which T.L., the father ofBilly Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris, grapples with the realities of a body that can no longer keep up with him.

“The truth of it is, [that scene] is very true to where I am at this point in my life physically,” Elliott said in a new interview withVariety. “Not mentally, but physically. I’ve had a hard life. I’ve been an athlete all my life, and I’ve been a laborer all my life, and I’m paying for it now.”

The moment Elliott referenced came during a heartbreaking scene in the Jan. 4 episode, when T.L. found himself trapped in a swimming pool after realizing he could no longer pull himself out on his own.

“With my knees and my hip, I can’t f---ing stand right now,” T.L. told Tommy as his son prepared to help him from the water.

The conversation quickly turned emotional as T.L. reflected on living in a retirement home before moving in with Tommy and Angela (Ali Larter).

“It’s a curse my mind is sharp,” T.L. told his son through tears. “I get to sit here and process all the ways my body is failing me.”

The exchange marked a turning point in the father-son relationship, culminating in a hug between the pair as Tommy encouraged his father to consider physical therapy.

Earlier this year, Elliott toldPEOPLEthat the season would focus heavily on the fractured relationship between father and son as they attempt to rebuild years of lost trust.

“This character I’m playing is a fractured man,” Elliott said at the time. “It’s gone on for him for years, since his wife turned inward, and he waited forever for her to come out of it, and she never really did. But consequently, [Tommy] paid for it, while [T.L.] checked out.”

“We’re going to spend much of this season seeing T.L. early on, but then it becomes both of us, I think, healing that relationship that’s falling apart,” he added.

Despite a career spanning more than six decades, Elliott said he’s still finding new ways to grow as an actor, including from his onscreen son.

“I’m working with Billy Bob Thornton, so I’m going to be learning something from him this time around,” Elliott toldVariety. “Even though he’s playing my son, he’s still got something to offer. He’s been in this game for a long time. He’s not only a brilliant actor, but he’s not a bad director or a writer.”

Elliott also praisedFrancesca Xuereb, who appears this season as Cheyenne, a stripper hired by Tommy to help T.L. with physical therapy, calling the experience of working with the actress a highlight.

Rosie O'Donnell reveals that she got a facelift despite thinking she never would: 'This is me'

Rosie O'Donnell explained on a Substack piece and social media Tuesday that she had a facelift.

Key Points

  • The former The View host wrote that she had thought she'd never do such a thing but felt her weight loss made her look like she was "melting."

  • After much thought, O'Donnell underwent the procedure, but she said no one has noticed.

Rosie O'Donnellhas officially introduced her new look.

The comedian and actress explained Tuesday onsocial mediathat she's undergone a facelift, something that she had previously been against. O'Donnell acknowledged her earlier take on the subject.

"I used to feel very strongly about facelifts. Not casually—morally," theSleepless in Seattlestar wrote in an abbreviated version of aSubstackentry. "I had assigned myself as head of all women who would never-ever. I thought it was a betrayal. Of feminism. Of aging. Of our team of women worldwide."

Not anymore. O'Donnell wrote that it was weight loss that changed her mind.

"And then I lost 50 pounds…" she noted. "It wasn't wrinkles— it was gravity. I'd look in the mirror and think, this isn't aging, this is… melting with intention. I tried to be evolved about it. And say things like, 'This is natural. This is earned.' And then… 'umm how earned does it have to look?' There's a point where acceptance starts to feel like lying."

The mother of five wrote that her 13-year-old daughter, Clay, whom she shared with late ex-wife Michelle Rounds, told her that she "wouldn't be able to respect" her if she went through with the procedure, something O'Donnell herself once would have said.

But she came to an important realization.

"If I'm teaching Clay anything," O'Donnell wrote, "it can't be that my body belongs to an idea either. Even a good idea. Even feminism. Because that's still not freedom — that's just a different authority telling you what you're allowed to do with your own face. I want them to grow up in a world where they don't feel like they have to change but also knows they can, if they want to, without losing moral standing in their own life. So in January, I did it."

She said that she turned to a doctor who had done work on friends of hers who "all still looked like themselves, just like they had recently been told good news."

Just before the procedure, O'Donnell recalled that she told her doctor she would never wish that they did more.

"I wanted to still be me, just… less haunted. And I do look like me — a slightly more well-rested emotionally stable version of me," O'Donnell wrote. "And here's the thing—no one has noticed. Not one person. Not a friend, not a stranger, not even people who owe me compliments. My teen daughter, has not said a word. Nothing. I went through a full existential feminist crisis, had my face and neck surgically altered, and the result is… zippo. Which honestly is the best possible outcome."

O'Donnell wrote too that she's grateful for the ability to "feel and choose and use my voice," unlike in the '90s before she felt comfortable coming out as a lesbian.

She concluded, "This is me."

Commenters were largely supportive: "Feminism has nothing to do with looking good and rested it’s about self confidence when gravity hits us all," one wrote.

Added another fan, "This is so vulnerable to admit. You can always change your opinions on things, and I love that you are speaking about it. You look great!"

O'Donnell famously relocated to Ireland in 2025, ahead of President Donald Trump's return to the presidency. The two havepublicly clashedfor decades.

Chelsea Handler Reveals She and the Younger ‘Cowboy’ Boyfriend She Met in Vegas Broke Up After 6 Months

Chelsea Handler revealed that she and the younger man she met at a Las Vegas blackjack table have called it quits after about six months together

NEED TO KNOW

  • "That was a really fun, like, adventure. We had a great five, six months together," Handler shared on Let's Be Honest with Kristen Cavallari

  • Handler shared that she prefers casual romances and has no desire to be part of a “unit” or traditional couple at this stage of her life

Chelsea Handlerand her "cowboy" have gone their separate ways.

While appearing onLet’s Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari, the comedian, 51, opened up about hermost recent relationshipwith a younger man whose identityshe has kept private, revealing that the romance ended after roughly six months.

Despite the split, Handler said there are no hard feelings between them — she simply isn’t interested in pursuing a long-term relationship at this stage of her life.

"The last guy I was dating, I met him in Vegas at a blackjack table. That was a really fun, like, adventure," Handler said. "We had a great five, six months together."

According to Handler, the breakup was amicable — and largely driven by her own lack of interest in pursuing a long-term relationship. The comedian admitted that around the six-month mark, she typically feels ready to move on, explaining that’s her “timeline” until the initial “buzz” wears off.

Even though the romance has ended, Handler said she and her ex remain friends. Because the relationship was casual from the start, she believes maintaining a friendship is possible.

“Maybe I’ll see him again, maybe we’ll fool around again,” she said, noting that she simply doesn’t want the expectations that come with defining the relationship.

Handler also clarified that publicly sharing photos of her “cowboy” earlier this year wasn’t meant to signal anything especially serious. "I post guys all the time that I'm dating," she explained. "I'm not posting them saying, 'this is my boyfriend.' It's like, who I'm spending time with."

At this stage of her life, Handler said she’s not interested in a committed, long-term partnership. Instead, she prefers relationships that remain lighthearted and uncomplicated.

"I am not a long-term person. I'm not interested in anything that comes after the six-month relationship mark," Handler admitted, "I'm not interested in dealing with your family or your issues. I am not interested."

"I don't want to be part of a unit. I want to have a good, sexy affair. I don't want to be a couple," she added.

Ideally, Handler would welcome a connection with a person who doesn't live nearby — "someone who I see probably, like, every two weeks" — and who's willing to travel with her. A large part of her interest in someone hinges on their ability to go on "fun trips," she said.

The chic, minimalist string bikini’s soft, buttery cream hue perfectly complemented her sun-kissed skin tone. A delicate mesh embellished with sequins lined the microfiber fabric of both pieces.

The triangle top comes with removable cups and no underwire. The shoulder straps have eyelets on the ends so they can be hooked onto the back band or tied around the neck. Meanwhile, thin ties serve as the back closure. The matching bottoms tie at the sides and have a slightly rounded waist at the front, which allows for a high-cut fit. The bikini created a timeless, sun-drenched poolside aesthetic.

Bieber’s beauty look was natural and radiant, echoing the “no-makeup” summer look. She sported a luminous, dewy complexion that highlighted a natural, golden-hour glow across her cheekbones and nose. Her hair splayed out behind her back as she reclined by the poolside.

Brad Keselowski Details Final Encounter with Kyle Busch on Plane Days Before NASCAR Icon’s Tragic Death at 41 (Exclusive)

Brad Keselowski reflects on his rivalry with the late Kyle Busch in an interview with PEOPLE

NEED TO KNOW

  • He recalls their final encounter on a plane days before Busch died suddenly at age 41, noting Busch seemed unwell but he didn't think much of it

  • Keselowski also recalls having "visions" that the longtime NASCAR rivals might have reconciled someday

Brad Keselowski once had “visions” of him and rivalKyle Buschburying the hatchet in their old age. Now, he's remembering their final moments together.

Busch died at age 41 on Thursday, May 21,from severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis. Speaking with PEOPLE four days later, Keselowski, 42, recalled seeing the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion — his longtime rival — on a plane days before his sudden death.

“I was flying to Dover last week with Kyle,” he told PEOPLE on Monday, May 25, adding that “it was probably more by chance than anything else.”

Kyle BuschCredit: Kevin C. Cox/Getty

Busch — who won his final race at the 2026 Ecosave 200 in the Delaware capital — was acting a bit differently than usual, Keselowski said of their final run-in outside of the racetrack.

“Kyle is normally a fairly gregarious person, very outgoing and he wasn't. He sat down one row behind me and next to me and fell asleep right away and I could tell he wasn't feeling well,” Keselowski said, adding that at the time, he “didn't really think that much of it, to be honest.”

“And that was pretty much the last time I saw him. We were in a race and you get in a race and you don't really see each other,” the Michigan native added. “So I saw him on the racetrack.”

Keselowski also shared that he is going to miss the “rivalry” he shared with Busch, and revealed that he often thought about putting it behind them someday.

“I guess I had visions before his death of... actually, I thought about this multiple times: What's it going to be like when we're both in the Hall of Fame and we're doing some kind of ceremony together, whatever that might be? Will the hatchet be buried? I think so,” he told PEOPLE. “And will we actually be able to share a laugh about it? I guess in my mind, I hope so and now obviously not.”

“The hard part is the closure was supposed to be when we were retired and when we were done racing together and I don't think that's just for me, by the way,” he later added. “I think that's for a lot of people. And to not get that is tough.”

But Keselowski clarified, “The loss of Kyle Busch is much greater than how it affects me, and so I don't wish to belittle that.”

Brad KeselowskiCredit: David Jensen/Getty

Of their rivalry, Keselowski also told PEOPLE that it changed shape over time, but how he finished in a race next to Busch was always on top of his mind.

“For whatever reason, Kyle and I had built into a relationship where although there's 30-some other drivers on the racetrack, I valued meeting him more than anyone else,” he explained. “Fifth place day and race is generally a good day. It's not a great day, but it's a good day. With a fifth place day where Kyle Busch finished fourth didn't feel like a good day. And conversely, a 10th place day where I beat Kyle Busch felt like a better day.”

“That's what a rivalry is at its core and that's how I felt about it," added Keselowski.

That being said, the NASCAR driver told PEOPLE, “time has a way of changing things. And I'll tell you as I reflect on it, what I'm going to miss the most about Kyle is the rivalry.”

“It's the middle of the season head-on one-on-ones that we had at different racetracks, and knowing he was the guy to beat and I was the guy to beat him," he continued. "And him knowing that, and kind of having that rivalry where we didn't talk to each other.”

“And when we were in settings together, we stood on opposite ends of the room,” Keselowski added. “In the moment, that didn't feel all that pleasant, but it sure beats the reality of today.”

Phil Collins Shares Rare Health Update and Says He 'Can't Really See' Himself Performing at Rock Hall Induction

Phil Collins shared that his health has improved after years of challenges

People

NEED TO KNOW

  • The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame asked him to perform at his induction in November, but he declined due to readiness concerns

  • Collins hinted at possibly returning to music in the future

Phil Collinsis sharing a positive update on his health — and what that means for the possibility of future performances.

Though the legendary drummer, 75, has been plagued by anumber of health issuesover the past few years, he told theBBCin a new interview that the past 18 months or so have been “fine” for him.

“Before that, not so good. Everything healthwise caught up with me at the same time and whatever could go wrong did go wrong. But everything's fine now,” Collins said. “I had problems with my knee, which I had for a while, but I played through it, toured through it. But eventually I had to have a knee operation and I had to have [it] five times because it kept either getting infected or it broke, you know. So I was inactive for a long time.”

The “In the Air Tonight” singer is set to beinducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fameas a solo artist in November. Though he's been feeling better, Collins said it's unlikely he will perform at the induction ceremony.

“I can't really see it happening, but I'm healthier now than I have been for quite a while,” he said.

Collins — who was inducted as a member of Genesis in 2010 — confirmed that he had been asked by the Rock Hall to perform, but turned down the offer, as he didn't quite feel he was ready.

“You can't just go on stage. You have to rehearse. And then by that point, if you've not been singing, your voice is going to be shot and then that's not going to be good. So I'd rather not do it,” he explained.

Still, the rocker didn't close the door on one day returning to a different stage, saying it's something he “would contemplate.”

“I mean, I'm constantly saying to myself, ‘I gotta go back down to my studio at home,'” he said. “I've got lots of lyrical ideas I write down. And there are things that are half-formed, and a couple of things that are finished. So there's things that I can get my teeth into to start working on.”

He last released an album of original material,Testify, in 2002.

Collins retired from playing drums in 2022 after his health woes made itdifficult for him to pick up a drumstick. He's undergone back and knee surgery in recent years, and said in a 2024 documentary that playing the drums since age 5 has “taken its toll” on his hands and legs.

In January, he told the BBC that his health issues are an “ongoing thing,” and he has a24-hour live-in nurse.

“I've had challenges with my knee. I had everything that could go wrong with me, did go wrong with me,” he said. “I got COVID in hospital. My kidneys started to back up. Everything seemed to converge at the same time… I can walk, albeit with assistance, you know, crutches or whatever.”

The star made arare public appearanceearlier this month alongside his ex-wife Jill Collins, Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster at The King's Trust 50th Anniversary Party at Buckingham Palace.

“Despite the downpours of torrential rain which did not seem to dampen the festivities @officialphilcollins and I were very proud and honored to be there and have a few private moments with King Charles who seemed genuinely pleased to see Phil who was the very first ambassador 40 years ago and a trustee even before that! “Rent” Music Director Tim Weil Says Jonathan Larson 'Certainly' Would've Made Changes to Musical Had He Seen the Previews (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW

  • Larson's untimely death highlighted the dangers of undiagnosed Marfan syndrome and raised awareness of the condition globally

  • Rent's themes were inspired by Larson's close-knit community of friends and their experiences in Lower Manhattan during the HIV/AIDS crisis

Tim Weil, the original music director ofRent, believes Jonathan Larson "certainly" wouldhave made a few changesto the acclaimed rock musical had he seen it in previews.

Weil, 67, worked closely with Larson, who wrote the book, script and lyrics for the 1996 Broadway show. However, Larson died on Jan. 25, 1996, at the age of 35, the night of the final rehearsal and just one day beforeRent'sfirst Off-Broadway preview performance.

"I don't think there's any question about it," Weil tells PEOPLE. "Certainly, during previews, he would've tried and fixed and done things, but, looking back, I believe he left us with the entire treasure map."

"We just had to figure out, from the 'you are here' red dot to the buried treasure, how we would get there, and that would determine what this show was," he continues. "But I think Jonathan left it all there for us. Other people have said to me over the years, 'Oh, wouldn't you like it if this song were better, that song were better?' I'm like, 'No. This is the show.' "

Weil shares that "storytelling through art at this levelis the ultimate giftJonathan could have left for this earth."

On his legacy, Weil says that Larson was a "great" and "dedicated" artist, who was "fiercely aggressive."

"And I don't mean aggressive in the bad way, just in terms of the way he approached his work. It wasn't with passivity, it was with passion," Weil shares. "He had a lot of class, he was a really, really good guy."

Weil still vividly remembers the week leading up to Larson's death, noting that just days before the composer died, he passed out in the back of the theater.

"We had all gone to a diner, and the paramedics went, 'Okay, he's good.' He got up, and he made it through the rest of the night," Weil shares. "He went to the ER the next day, and he was still feeling terrible."

Despite feeling sick, Weil recalls a moment that he felt encapsulates Larson's character.

"He had the presence of mind with his big show about to go into previews and all the excitement and stress around that, he still had the presence of mind to call our associate director, Martha Banta, and ask her how she was feeling because the initial feeling was, 'Jonathan must have gotten food poisoning.' Jonathan had the turkey burger. He knew that Martha had the same. So he called her on Tuesday to see how she was doing," Weil says.

The story, Weil shares, "says everything about Jonathan."

"Just in terms of his generosity, his spirit, and all the talk about being a part of the community and family, and it's true when you do shows, there is a bond that happens, but this was the ultimate embodiment of the community and the family that Jonathan felt that we all were," Weil says. "He was such an empath. But even through the work and through all, through all the very busy time we had, he was a real empath, and I really admired him professionally, and I really admired him personally and respected him."

The musicalRent, which originally starred Idina Menzel, Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, Jesse L. Martin, and Taye Diggs, among others, centered on young creatives in Lower Manhattan amid the HIV/AIDS crisis.

"They always say, write what you know. He was writing about his friends and people that he was coming into contact with, and the friend community," Weil shares. "We are born into a family, and then we go out into the world, and we make our family, and this was Jonathan's family and his friends and his friends' friends, and he told all of their stories and then some."

While doctors originally told Larson he likely had the flu or food poisoning, he later died from an aortic dissection, believed to have been caused by undiagnosed Marfan syndrome. According to theMarfan Foundation, the genetic aortic and vascular condition can cause aortic enlargement, which can be life-threatening.

Weil emphasizes that Larson's tragic death helped others who were also unknowingly living with Marfan syndrome.

"Amazingly, he wasn't done saving lives or changing lives while he was alive, as a result of his Marfan diagnosis. I can't imagine the number of lives that were saved around the world when people saw Jonathan and saw themselves, by just seeing his appearance, that they had similar physical traits, and between the work the Marfan Foundation did with the Larsons and the work that's gone on and over the years, over the many decades," Weil shares.

"In some ironic, tragic, beautiful way, the gift he left us all with, not onlyRentbut people's ability to see themselves in Jonathan, and change their outcome," Weil adds.

April Dawn Shinske, the chief communications and marketing officer for theMarfan Foundation, says that once people get diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, "they're in a decent position to get expert care, connect with the community, and really thrive at a normal lifespan similar to the average person."

"When they don't know, which is the situation Jonathan was in, they have a 250 times greater risk of aortic dissection," Shinske says. "If that's not medically monitored, if they're not on medications, if they're not getting CAT scans, once a year, and preventative surgery, what can oftentimes happen is exactly what happened to Jonathan, which is you have an aortic dissection that can be fatal within minutes or hours or days. Many medical providers only see a case of Marfan once or twice in their entire careers."

"His reach and his enduring legacy are immense because people in our community see themselves in him, both in beautiful ways in terms of the talent that he had and the fact that you can thrive beyond your condition, and in terrifying ways, in the fact that he lost his life," Shinske adds.

For those with Marfan, Shinske says, "Jonathan represents the awareness that is needed."

"If the world knows, if first responders know about Marfan, ER nurses know about Marfan, school nurses, then more people will live to their elder years. When they see Jonathan 30 years later, they still respond in numbers that are astronomically higher than anything else we touch or do all year long. His legacy is just amazing for our community," Shinske says.
