California fireworks warehouse catches fire and explodesNew Foto - California fireworks warehouse catches fire and explodes

A warehouse storing fireworks in California caught fire and exploded Tuesday, sending a fireball into the air, launching debris and causing pyrotechnics to detonate above the site, according to officials and video from the scene. The Yolo County Sheriff's Office said the warehouse, near the Esparto area northwest of Sacramento, exploded and was actively burning. It was not immediately clear whether there were injuries. "We urge everyone to avoid the area so that fire crews and emergency responders can safely do their work," the sheriff's office said on social media. "A one mile evacuation area has been placed around the scene." Firefighters responded to the area just before 6 p.m.,NBC affiliate KCRA of Sacramento reported. Helicopter video taken by KCRA showed fires at the facility, including at least one building ablaze, and fireworks launching into the air and detonating. The video shows white smoke rushing from inside the building out through the roof before a large explosion and fireball, with many airbursts from fireworks. The cause of the fire and explosion was unknown Tuesday night, the sheriff's office said. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit said it was responding to the commercial and vegetation fire in Yolo County. Esparto is a community of around 3,000 almost 30 miles northwest of Sacramento. The explosion happened near the border between Esparto and Madison, which lies to the east, the sheriff's office said.

Jackie and Shadow's eaglets at risk from Fourth of July fireworks, petition saysNew Foto - Jackie and Shadow's eaglets at risk from Fourth of July fireworks, petition says

The California group that oversees a famous eagle family is warning officials about the danger fireworks could cause the new eaglets ahead of Fourth of July. Nonprofit organization Friends of Big Bear Valley, which runs a 24-hour live feed monitoring the eagles, expressed concerns about an upcoming fireworks display in Big Bear Lake, California. In aFacebook postMonday, June 30, the group emphasized the impact that fireworks have on the environment and wildlife, including sister eagletsGizmo and Sunnyand their parentsJackie and Shadow. The organization also highlighted aChange.org petitionwith more than 30,000 signatures calling for the outright cancelation of the July 4 firework show to protect the family and other wildlife. "The loud and frightening explosions of fireworks can spook [eagles], causing them to flee their nests, potentially into situations fraught with danger," the petition said. "This not only jeopardizes their immediate safety but could also lead to them leaving the area permanently, which would be a tragic loss for our community." The Friends of Big Bear Valley explained that Sunny and Gizmo are specifically at risk after just learning to fly. "Shadow and Jackie leaving at this time of training and growth for Sunny and Gizmo could be especially devastating to the juveniles' long and short-term development and chances of survival," Friends of Big Bear Valley wrote on Facebook. "Eagles and especially juveniles have very poor night vision and being startled into flight at night is very dangerous." Their petition added that eagles don't naturally fly after dark. "We will be holding high hope for the safety of Jackie, Shadow, Sunny and Gizmo and all the rest of nature's beautiful creatures," Friends of Big Bear Valley wrote. "Please join me in hoping for their safety and protection." Despite concerns for wildlife, Visit Big Bear will continue to host its 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular in the city. Visit Big Bear CEO Travis Scott emphasized that its role is to balance and prioritize tradition, community celebration, wildlife stewardship and the tourism-driven local economy "The board looked at what that firework show [brought] to support our local businesses, our restaurants, our lodging and just overall jobs in our community," Scott told the Palm Desert Sun, part of the USA TODAY Network. The town generally attracts 100,000 visitors for the Fourth of July and numerous community organizations are involved in the 4th of July Spectacular, according to Scott. He added that local partners and government agencies help organize the fireworks shows with "wildlife and fire safety in mind." "What makes Big Bear Lake a special place is our rich, diverse ecosystem and obviously our resident bald eagles have become the iconic symbol of that," Scott said. "What our organization strives to look at is that they're a part of a larger natural balance that we work hard to respect year-round and we do promote environmental education and stewardship and that is also very important to us. The co-existence of the fireworks and the eagles is not a new phenomenon." Scott described two previous instances in which he said they've worked with Friends of Big Bear Valley: Canceling Memorial Day fireworks in 2022 and doing a drone show instead of fireworks for Labor Day in 2023. "I believe that the board and the community will take these concerns that are presented from outside our community under advisement," Scott said in response to whether any changes would be made to future fireworks displays in the area. Friends of Big Bear Valley attached a presentation to their Facebook post that documented previous instances of how the eagles have responded to fireworks. Following Fourth of July fireworks in 2022, Jackie and Shadow weren't seen or heard for six days. The mating pair were also not seen or heard for three days after Fourth of July fireworks the following year, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley. TheU.S. Fish and Wildlife Service echoedFriends of Big Bear Valley over how fireworks can cause wildlife to flee, "ending up in unexpected areas or roadways, flying into buildings and other obstacles." Sunny and Gizmo were two of three hatchlings born to Jackie and Shadow in March 2025. A third eaglet, namedMistyin honor of a former volunteer, died after asnowstormhit the area. But Jackie and Shadow have been able to make sure Sunny and Gizmo are healthy and happy. Both sisters completed their first flights last month. US judge blocks Trump from ending Temporary Protected Status for HaitiansNew Foto - US judge blocks Trump from ending Temporary Protected Status for Haitians

By Luc Cohen and Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) -A federal judge on Tuesday rejected the Trump administration's bid to end temporary deportation protections and work permits for approximately 521,000 Haitian immigrants before the program's scheduled expiration date. The Department of Homeland Security had in February rescinded Democratic President Joe Biden's extension through February 3, 2026 of Temporary Protected Status for Haitians. It called for the program to end on August 3, and last week pushed back that date to September 2. U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan in Brooklyn, however, said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem did not follow instructions and a timeline mandated by Congress to reconsider the TPS designation for Haitians. "Secretary Noem does not have statutory or inherent authority to partially vacate a country's TPS designation," making her actions "unlawful," Cogan wrote. "Plaintiffs are likely to (and, indeed, do) succeed on the merits." Cogan also said Haitians' interests in being able to live and work in the United States "far outweigh" potential harm to the U.S. government, which remains free to enforce immigration laws and terminate TPS status as prescribed by Congress. Republican President Donald Trump has made a crackdown on legal and illegal immigration a central plank of his second White House term. Cogan was appointed to the bench by President George W. Bush, also a Republican. US APPEAL EXPECTED In a statement, Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said Haiti's TPS designation was granted following the 2010 earthquake in that country, and was never intended as a "de facto" asylum program. "This ruling delays justice and seeks to kneecap the President's constitutionally vested powers," she said. "We expect a higher court to vindicate us." Federal courts blocked Trump from ending most TPS enrollment during his first term. Nine Haitian TPS holders, an association of churches and a chapter of the Service Employees International Union filed the lawsuit on March 14, saying Noem did not do a required review of current conditions in Haiti before ending TPS early. More than 1 million people, over half of them children, are displaced within Haiti, where gang violence is prevalent despite a United Nations-backed security mission that began last year. "While the fight is far from over, this is an important step," Manny Pastreich, president of SEIU Local 32BJ, whose members include Haitian TPS holders, said in a statement. TRUMP CRACKDOWN Noem shares Trump's hardline stance on immigration issues, and also moved to end TPS for about 350,000 Venezuelans as well as thousands of people from Afghanistan and Cameroon. On May 19, the U.S. Supreme Court let TPS end for the Venezuelans, signaling that other terminations could be allowed. Noem has authority to grant TPS for six to eight months to people from countries experiencing natural disasters, armed conflict or other extraordinary events. The Haitian plaintiffs also claimed the suspension of their TPS status was motivated in part by racial animus, violating their constitutional right to equal protection. Trump falsely said in a September 2024 debate with Democratic candidate Kamala Harris that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio were eating pets, sparking fear of retaliation toward Haitians. Why Jenna Bush Hager Thinks the White House Is Haunted: "I Honestly Had Chills"

Jenna Bush Hageris standing her (possibly haunted) ground. The former first daughter turnedTODAYco-host isn't backing off her longstanding belief that the White House is haunted. Hager's admission that she believes ghosts roam the White House halls has captured curiosity ever since she shared a chilling yet charming anecdote about a musical spirit haunting 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue during an October 2020 virtualappearanceonThe Kelly Clarkson Show. AfterKelly Clarksonasked Hager a series of true or false questions, the host was taken aback after Hager confirmed that she believes rumors of the White House being haunted are true. And hertwin sister Barbara Pierce Bushwas happy to verify the story. RELATED:Jenna Bush Hager's Husband Had a Spicy Reaction to Her New Bob: "Damn, That's..." "Barbara and I were going to sleep — our rooms were right next to each other, and it was in college when people would call late," Hager shared. "So the phone rang and I woke up and all of a sudden we heard like, 1920s piano music coming out of our fireplace." While Hager was happy to dish some of the details of her paranormal experience with Clarkson, she and her sister Barbara provided a more detailed timeline of spooky events during a joint March 2025 interview withPeople. "Barbara didn't believe me the first time. I was sleeping in my room — this was in college — and I woke up and heard opera coming out of the fireplace. And I could feel it! I honestly had chills," Hager said, recalling that she flocked to Barbara's adjacent bedroom in fear. "I'm like 'Barbara, Barbara!' I woke her up. 'I heard something. I think there's a ghost.' I got in bed with her, and we went back to sleep. Two days later she came to sleep in [my bedroom] and she was like, 'There's no ghost.'" While Barbara had been initially hesitant to think her sister experienced something paranormal, one night changed those beliefs. "Two days later, I was sleeping in her room. We were dozing off, and then we heard olden-times jazz music coming out of the fireplace again," Barbara recalled. "We were so scared. We wanted to get in bed with our parents, but we were 22 and it felt inappropriate. And so then we calmed ourselves down and we thought, 'Well, surely that was the cat. [The cat] Willard was playing the olden jazz music on the piano.'" Whatever it takes to sleep at night, right? However, once Hager woke up early the next morning to head to her internship, she discovered the top of the piano was on, covering the keys and obliterating the sisters' theory that the cat was the piano-playing culprit. So, who was playing music? "There [are] ghosts," Barbara concluded. "There's a lot of people that have lived in the White House, and I think there's some unfinished business with someone that likes music." Hager isn't the only one catching otherworldly energies at the White House. During a May 2021episodeofTODAY with Hoda & Jenna, Hager revealed that the twins' sleepless night inspired her to bring up the incident to a White House employee, who echoed their suspicions. "There's an incredible man — Buddy — who still works at the White House, we adored him. And [that morning] I said, 'Buddy, you wouldn't believe what Barbara and I heard last night,'" Hager recalled. "And he goes, "Oh Jenna, you wouldn't believe what I've seen in these walls." But noteveryone in the Bush familyis convinced. Former First Lady Laura Bush, whoappearedonThe Kelly Clarkson Showin May 2021, was keen to brush off her daughter's ghost story, assuring Clarkson it was "probably just the Secret Service talking down the hall in another room that they heard." AfterHoda Kotbpresented Laura's stance, Hager seemed humorously miffed at her mom. Despite Laura's refusal to think the White House is haunted, Hager cited Buddy and Barbara as being firmly Team Jenna on the matter, offering to call up her sister and put her on speakerphone if anyone doubted her. "Shall we do some research?" Hager teased. "Can the Secret Service play 1920s piano music?" It wouldn't be the first horror film to feature a skeptical parent raising their eyebrows, but it might be the first to take place inside the White House. WatchTODAYweekdays at 7 a.m. ET onNBC.
