The partialshutdown of the U.S. federal governmenthit the one-week mark as the clock struck midnight in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The shutdown, the 15th since 1981, is on track to become thefourth-longest in U.S. history, eclipsing the six-day shutdown in 1995. Thelongest shutdown lasted 35 daysduring Trump's first term, from 2018-2019. Pressure to end the standoff could mount next week, when1.3 million active-duty troops, hundreds of thousands of active members of the National Guard and civilians who work for the Defense Department will not be paid on Oct. 15 as scheduled. Here's what to know as the federal government shutdown enters day seven. People wait in line to enter the Federal Building in Los Angeles, California on October 1, 2025, where services are experiencing significant disruptions due to the federal government shutdown, as essential workers continue working without pay and non-essential federal workers are furloughed. With the government out of money after President Donald Trump and lawmakers failed to agree on a deal to keep the lights on, many federal departments and agencies have been closed since midnight. See what remains open and what has closed. USA TODAY is following the shutdown viadaily live blogs. Find stories about the shutdown's impact, as well as more information, below. Yes, the federal government remains largely shut down. Pay has been suspended for roughly 2 million federal workers, with nearly750,000 ordered not to report to work. Other employees, including themilitaryandair traffic control workers, must work without compensation until a budget deal is reached. TheSocial Security Administrationwill continue to issue retirement and disability benefits, but will furlough 12% of its staff and pause marketing campaigns, according to the agency's shutdown plan. Payments will likewise continue under theMedicare and Medicaidhealth programs. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, thenation's largest food aid program, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, known as WIC, will continue operations during a shutdown as funds allow, according to a shutdown planning document published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. TheU.S. Postal Servicewill be unaffected because it does not depend on Congress for funding, USPS said in a statement. Post offices will be open. More than13,000 air traffic controllersand about50,000 Transportation Security Administration officersare still required to show up for work during the shutdown. They are not being paid and controllers are set to miss their first paycheck on Oct. 14. The nearly 2 million U.S. military personnel will remain at their postswithout payuntil the shutdown ends, according to a statement by the newly namedDepartment of War, formally the Department of Defense, based on an executive order from Trump, unless Congress officially changes the name. National Guard forcesthat Trump has deployed to U.S. cities must also continue to work. Agents at theFBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Coast Guardand other federal law enforcement agencies will remain on the job. Justice Department staff who administer the immigration court system will largely stay on the job because Trump declared illegal immigration a national emergency, according to a department statement. Deloitte to partially refund Australian government for report with apparent AI-generated errorsNew Foto - Deloitte to partially refund Australian government for report with apparent AI-generated errors

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Deloitte Australia will partially refund the 440,000 Australian dollars ($290,000) paid by the Australian government for a report that was littered with apparentAI-generatederrors, including a fabricated quote from a federal court judgment and references to nonexistent academic research papers. The financial services firm's report to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations was originally published on the department's website in July. A revised version was published Friday after Chris Rudge, a Sydney University researcher of health and welfare law, said he alerted the media that the report was "full of fabricated references." Deloitte had reviewed the 237-page report and "confirmed some footnotes and references were incorrect," the department said in a statement Tuesday. "Deloitte had agreed to repay the final instalment under its contract," the department said. The amount will be made public after the refund is reimbursed. Asked to comment on the report's inaccuracies, Deloitte told The Associated Press in a statement the "matter has been resolved directly with the client." Deloitte did not respond when asked if the errors were generated by AI. A tendency for generative AI systems to fabricate information is known ashallucination. The report reviewed departmental IT systems' use of automated penalties in Australia's welfare system. The department said the "substance" of the report had been maintained and there were no changes to its recommendations. The revised version included a disclosure that a generative AI language system, AzureOpenAI, was used in writing the report. Quotes attributed to a federal court judge were removed, as well as references to nonexistent reports attributed to law and software engineering experts. Rudge said he found up to 20 errors in the first version of the report. The first error that jumped out at him wrongly stated that Lisa Burton Crawford, a Sydney University professor of public and constitutional law, had written a nonexistent book with a title suggesting it was outside her field of expertise. "I instantaneously knew it was either hallucinated by AI or the world's best kept secret because I'd never heard of the book and it sounded preposterous," Rudge said. Work by his academic colleagues had been used as "tokens of legitimacy," cited by the report's authors but not read, Rudge said, addding that he considered misquoting a judge was a more serious error in a report that was effectively an audit of the department's legal compliance. "They've totally misquoted a court case then made up a quotation from a judge and I thought, well hang on: that's actually a bit bigger than academics' egos. That's about misstating the law to the Australian government in a report that they rely on. So I thought it was important to stand up for diligence," Rudge said. Senator Barbara Pocock, the Australian Greens party's spokesperson on the public sector, said Deloitte should refund the entire AU$440,000 ($290,000). Deloitte "misused AI and used it very inappropriately: misquoted a judge, used references that are non-existent," Pocock told Australian Broadcasting Corp. "I mean, the kinds of things that a first-year university student would be in deep trouble for."

Cautious calm in Aleppo after clashes between Syrian forces and Kurdish fightersNew Foto - Cautious calm in Aleppo after clashes between Syrian forces and Kurdish fighters

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — A cautious calm set in Tuesday morning in neighborhoods in the city of Aleppo in northern Syria after overnight clashes between Syrian security forces and Kurdish fighters. The violence came as tensions grow between the central government in Damascus and Kurdish authorities in northeast Syria. Syrian state-run news agency SANA reported the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces targeted checkpoints of the Internal Security Forces on Monday evening, killing one and injuring four. SDF forces fired into residential neighborhoods in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Achrafieh neighborhoods of Aleppo "with mortar shells and heavy machine guns" and there were civilian casualties, but it was not clear how many were wounded and killed, SANA reported. The SDF denied attacking the checkpoints and said its forces withdrew from the area months ago. Syrian state-run TV reported Tuesday morning that a ceasefire had been reached without giving further details. The new leadership in Damascus led by interimPresident Ahmad al-Sharaa, the former leader of an Islamist insurgent group that helped overthrow former Syrian President Bashar Assad, inked a deal in March with the U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, which controls much of the country's northeast. Under the agreement, the SDF was to merge its forces with the new Syrian army, but implementation has stalled. Damascus seeks to consolidate control over all of Syria, while the SDF wants to maintain the de facto autonomy of northeast Syria from the central state. Syria heldparliamentary elections Sundayin most areas of Syria, but voting was not held in SDF-controlled areas. In April, scores of SDF fighters left the two predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo as part of the deal with Damascus. The SDF issued a statement Tuesday accusing government military factions of carrying out "repeated attacks" against civilians in the two Aleppo neighborhoods and imposing a siege on them. Government forces then attempted "to advance with tanks and armored vehicles, targeting residential areas with mortar shells and drone strikes, which has led to civilian casualties and significant damage to property," the SDF said, which "provoked the residents and pushed them to defend themselves, alongside the internal security forces in the neighborhoods."
