Around 40 killed, 100 injured in explosion in Swiss ski resort bar, police say

LENS, Switzerland - Around 40 people have been killed and 100 injured, most of them seriously, after an explosion tore through a crowded bar during a New Year's Eve party in the upscale ski resort of Crans-Montana, Swiss officials said on Thursday, Jan. 1.

A fire broke out at 1.30 a.m. in a bar called "Le Constellation" in the resort in southwestern Switzerland. The cause of the blast remains unclear but authorities said it appeared to be an accident.

"At the moment we are considering this a fire and we are not considering the possibility of an attack," prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud told a press conference, adding that authorities had opened a full investigation.

Some of the victims are from other countries, said Stephane Ganzer, head of security for the Valais canton. The canton's head of police, Frederic Gisler, said a helpline had been opened for relatives.

"I can't hide from you that we are all shaken by what happened overnight in Crans," Gisler told the news conference.

"Our count is about 100 injured, most seriously, and unfortunately tens of people are presumed dead," he said, adding that patients had been dispatched to hospitals in Sion, Lausanne, Geneva and Zurich.

The Italian foreign ministry said information from Swiss police indicated about 40 deaths, but Gisler declined to give a specific figure.

Earlier, police said many people were being treated for burns and that the area had been completely closed off, with a no-fly zone imposed over Crans-Montana. Authorities said 10 helicopters and 40 ambulances had been deployed.

"What was meant to be a moment of joy turned, on the first day of the year in Crans-Montana, into mourning that touches the entire country and far beyond," Swiss Federal President Guy Parmelinsaid on X, expressing condolences.

Prosecutor Pilloud said authorities were trying to get the bodies of the victims to their families.

"A lot of resources have been put into forensics to identify the victims. These resources are intended to allow us to get the bodies to the families as soon as possible," she said.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said the fire may have been caused by fireworks.

"It seems to have been an accident caused by a fire, by some explosion, by some firecracker thrown during New Year's celebrations," he told Italy's Sky TG24 tv channel.

Pink Rings in the New Year With a Health Update From Her Hospital Bed

Pinkis heading into 2026 with an upbeat attitude, despite spending New Year's Eve in the hospital. After all, as she put it so tactfully, "Rock 'n' roll is a contact sport," and the singer isknown for some impressive stunt work.

The "I Am Here" singer underwent a surgical procedure to replace a pair of discs in her neck before the clock struck midnight, putting a damper on any party plans this year—but setting her up forsuccessbefore returning to the road in the coming months.

Pink Was All Smiles, All Things Considered

Shortly after midnight EST on Jan. 1, the performing artist shared a photo from her hospital bed, celebrating the end of theYear of the Snakewhile expressing her excitement to ring in the Year of the Horse.

She smiled brightly for the selfie, a deep contrast to the wrinkled hospital gown she wore and the large white bandage securing some type of medical tubing—likely a wound vac or a drain—to her neck.

"I am leaving behind all of my hurt in 2025," she declared in the caption, calling the year "a doozy." Still, she found "so much beauty" in the year, too.

"I got to wake up every day and get out of bed and go about my business," she detailed. "The business of loving my children andhelping them to follow their dreams. Showing them thatlifeis an adventure or nothing at all. Loving and laughing, cooking and dancing, crying and screaming, forgiving and apologizing, and all the rest of our beautiful messiness."

"And I end the year giving reverence to, paying attention to, and fixing my body," she continued. "It may not be a fancy Face lift, but I am getting two new shiny discs in my neck. A new scar, a new reminder, that I appreciate this vessel that I have and use it for all it's worth."

She went on to give thanks for her ability to make the choice to have the surgery to improve her well-being, recognizing that not everyone has that privilege. "I will work this year to help preserve the choices of others to make for themselves and their families and this very pursuit ofhappiness," she pledged. "Let's do better for ourselves and for others. Let's not be afraid to take care of ourselves and others."

Naturally, fans flooded her comments with supportive well-wishes, especially those planning on seeing her perform in Mexico in a few months for her next Carnival tour dates come April.

The Singer Rang in the New Year Alone, as Her Family Went on a New Year's Adventure

Meanwhile, as the singer also mentioned in her caption, her husband,Carey Hart, and their two kids,Willow, 14, andJameson, 8, are off on a snowboarding adventure to celebrate the holidays.

Thefamilyis incredibly active, with Jameson involved in kickboxing, baseball, golfandmotocross, Willow known towakeboardandski, and Hart, of course, formerly riding BMX bikes professionally.

Pink's Husband Underwent Emergency Surgery Earlier in 2025

Hart is also the most recent member of the family to undergo surgery, suffering a "nasty" accident this past springthat severed his small intestine from his colon and required 20 surgical staples in his chest.

It seems that things are back to normal for the athlete, since he's hitting the slopes, and we're glad to hear it. Hopefully, Pink will be following in his footsteps soon!
