Spirit Airlines shutting down after failed effort at government rescue deal

Traveler arrives for Spirit Airlines flight, learns the company has shut down 02:57

CBS News

Spirit Airlines announced early Saturday morning that it was ceasing operations after the budget carrier failed to secure a$500 million federal bailout.

Spirit Aviation Holdings, the airline's parent company, said in a news release that it "regretfully announced" that it had "started an orderly wind-down of operations, effective immediately."

"All Spirit flights have been cancelled, and Spirit Guests should not go to the airport," the airline said, adding that it would automatically process refunds for any flight that was purchased through the airline with a credit or debit card.

Department of TransportationSecretary Sean Duffy said Saturday that Spirit has a reserve fund to refund tickets to the original form of payment for travelers whose flights have been cancelled. People who booked with a third party, like a travel agent, should contact their point of purchase, Duffy said. The airline hasset up a websiteto answer questions regarding the shutdown process.

Some of Spirit's bondholders, including Ken Griffin's Citadel and Ares Management Corp., had opposed the deal, U.S. officials previously told CBS News. Duffy said that a "creditor issue" ultimately prevented a rescue plan.

"In March 2026, we reached an agreement with our bondholders on a restructuring plan that would have allowed us to emerge as a go-forward business," Spirit CEO Dave Davis said in Saturday's statement. "However, the sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the Company."

Rising prices left "no choice," airline says

The Florida-based airline, which has filed twice for bankruptcy since 2024, recently faced surging costs injet fueldue tothe Iran war.

The "recent material increase in oil prices" brought on by the Iran war and "other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit's financial outlook," the airline said in its statement. "With no additional funding available to the Company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down."

Duffy disputed this version of events, highlighting Spirit's bankruptcy filings.

"Spirit was in dire straits long before the war with Iran," Duffy said, adding that the airline's low-cost model "wasn't working."

The Trump administration's proposed bailout would have given the U.S. government a90% stake in the airline. Spirit's cash reserves had dwindled in recent days as talks with the government broke down, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions. Duffy said President Trump "was like a dog on a bone trying to figure out a way to keep Spirit afloat," but that "in the end, a deal couldn't be reached."

The airline industry faces higher costs due to rising energy prices, prompting carriers to raise fares and cut unprofitable routes. A new Deutsche Bank forecast predicts U.S. passenger airlines' annual fuel bill increasing $24 billion, relative to a forecast made before the start of the Iran war. While the bank believes airlines will be able to generate $14 billion more in revenue to offset those costs, they predict airlines will earn $8.4 billion less than previously expected.

By the time of Spirit's first bankruptcy filing in November 2024, the company had lost more than $2.5 billion since the start of 2020. In 2025, Spirit cut almost 4,000 jobs and 200 underperforming routes, ending the year with about 7,500 employees, including 2,000 pilots and 3,000 flight attendants, according to its latestannual report.

Spirit again filed for bankruptcy in August 2025 and disclosed in a regulatory filing that it had "substantial doubt" about its ability to continue operating.

"No frills" flying

Liquidating Spirit will bring an end to an airline known for its bright yellow planes and rock-bottom fares. The company's roots go back to 1983, when the airline wasspun offfrom a trucking company. Initially called Charter One, the airline rebranded in 1992 as Spirit Airlines and added more planes and routes. The company shifted to a "no frills" approach to travel in 2007, according to its union.

Trump administration officials were told that Spirit would wind down operations within 24 hours, CBS News learned Friday from people familiar with the matter. They confirmed that the White House would not make a last-ditch effort to save the airline.

When President Trump was asked about a bailout for Spirit Airlines on Friday, he said, "Well, I guess we're looking at it. If we can do it, we'll do it, but only if it's a good deal."

Davis in his statement thanked the Trump administration and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick for "their extraordinary efforts to try to preserve jobs and service across the country."

Spirit flew to more than 40 cities in the U.S., with a main hub at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, and had international routes to the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Industry reaction

Reactions to Spirit's announcement came fast on Saturday. United Airlineslaunched a webpageproviding capped fares to Spirit customers. Southwest Airlines, JetBlue and Delta Airlines also announced reduced fares for affected Spirit travelers, according to the Department of Transportation.

To alleviate concerns about higher prices, some airlines will continue to offer reduced fares on former high-volume Spirit routes for all passengers, the department said.

"This is the airline industry stepping up and trying to provide relief as Spirit is going to go through this liquidation," Duffy said.

American Airlines, which serves 70 of the 72 airports Spirit flew from, said it was "reviewing opportunities to add additional capacity," including larger aircraft and adding flights on popular routes. The airline also said it was working to provide transportation for Spirit employees who had been displaced while working.

American Airlines said it was preparing to launch a jobs page specifically for Spirit staff members. United Airlines will launch a similar effort, the Department of Transportation said.

“The song 'Y.M.C.A.' spends a fifth week at No. 1 on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales, the most for any song by a group in 2024,” Billboard said in anX postat the time.

“The song originally reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 in 1979," the music chart company added.

"We love that song," he said. “But [Melania] goes, ‘Darling, please.’ You know, she's a very elegant woman. She goes, ‘Darling, please don't dance. It's not presidential.’ I said, ‘It may not be presidential, but I'm leading by 20 points in the polls or something.’ ”

Key Points

  • The "Takes a Little Time" singer has had open-heart surgery, a brain injury, and surgery on her throat and shoulder since 2020.

  • She will release her first album in a decade, The Me That Remains, May 8.

Amy Grant has been through several health struggles in the last few years, but husband Vince Gill has helped her stay hopeful.

"I just remember saying to Vince, 'What if this is all I get back? What if this is it?'" the "Baby, Baby" singer said Thursday on NPR'sWild Card With Rachel Martin. "Because, to me, it's like the world is in a conversation, and I am down the hall and in a back bedroom [when it comes to] my response time."

Grant, 65, has endured open-heart surgery, a brain injury, and surgery on her throat and shoulder since 2020.

"He just said, 'Amy, life happens to every one of us every day,'" Grant recalled. "A virtuoso musician could have a stroke and never be able to pick up their instrument again. All you do is you just take the hand you're dealt that day and live the life that you get."

That's been difficult for the six-time Grammy winner who appreciates a good joke and likes to drop her own one-liners.

But "that doesn’t happen when you're like three steps behind the rest of the room," she said.

Her physical challenges have also included having to learn to sing again, following the traumatic brain injury she suffered in a July 2022 crash on her bike that left her with loss of short-term memory, balance problems, and a cyst in her throat that needed to be removed.

Grant married Gill, a music star in his own right, in 2000. She was previously married to Gary Chapman, with whom she shares three adult children. She and Gill share daughter Corrina, who's 25.

Grant has released multiple albums since then, including the upcoming and very personalThe Me That Remains, which, she told NPR, was inspired by her return to touring in 2023. She found herself looking at the audience, full of people about her age, and wondering.

"At some point,," Grant asked herself, "am I doing us all a disservice by not writing about what life feels like now?"

Green Party divisions exposed as Polanski faces backlash over ‘inappropriate’ Golders Green post

Green PartyleaderZack Polanskihas faced a backlash from within his own party after he shared a controversial social media post criticising the arrest of theGolders Greenattack suspect, which thechief of the Met Policedescribed as “inaccurate and misguided”.

The Independent US

Mr Polanski is facing calls to apologise for retweeting an X post accusing Met officers of detaining the suspect of “repeatedly and violently kicking a mentally ill man in the head” when he was alreadyincapacitated from being tasered.

In a rare intervention, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner SirMark Rowleycalled out Mr Polanski for sharing the post and later accused him of “undermining” the force.

The row has exposed cracks within the party, with senior figures failing to back Mr Polanski when questioned on the matter on Thursday evening.

Claiming he had not seen the X post, Mr Slaughter said: “It does seem, from what I've read, [it] was inappropriate to retweet.”

The party’s deputy leader Rachel Millward was also challenged on the post, telling the BBC’s Question Time programme that she was “extremely grateful” for the emergency service response.

“I'm sure it was beyond terrifying, and these people are brave, well trained in they do, I'm sure they did a brilliant job,” she said.

Asked if she would echo the post, she said: “I haven't actually seen the retweet, so I'm not quite sure what the what he was looking at there. Of course, police response always needs to be proportionate. But the headline here is, what do we do about rising antisemitism and making sure that we don't have hate in our society?”

SirMarksaid in a letter to Mr Polanski that he was “disappointed” in the politician’s decision to share the post, warning that it could have a “chilling effect”.

He said that the officers “are nothing short of extraordinary”, saying: “Without their efforts to stop him I dread to think what the outcome could have been.”

On Friday, Met chief Mark Rowley insisted the rare public intervention was not political but instead an effort to prevent ‘undermining the confidence’ of his officers (PA)

He added: “London’sJewishcommunities are scared.”

On Friday, Sir Mark said the officers were still “shaken” hours after arrest, and insisted the rare public intervention was not political but instead an effort to prevent “undermining the confidence” of his officers.

He told LBC: “I’m not interested in politics but if somebody eminent, rather than some of the oddballs on social media, if someone eminent says something or does something which I see has a risk to undermining the confidence of my officers to act – because they need that sense of public support – they now need to intervene on that, and that’s what I did with that letter.”

Former home secretary Grant Shapps, who also served as defence secretary, toldThe Independentthat Mr Polanski should apologise for what he called a “disgraceful” intervention”.

Former home secretary Grant Shapps, who also served as defence secretary, told The Independent Zack Polanski should apologise for what he called a ‘disgraceful intervention’ (PA)

“Zack Polanski’s intervention is not just misguided – it is frankly disgraceful,” he said. “For a national political leader to second-guess those officers, amplify unverified claims, and undermine confidence in policing in the immediate aftermath is deeply irresponsible.

“It sends entirely the wrong signal at a time when the Jewish community, targeted here and in the past few weeks – are looking to the police for protection and reassurance.

“Polanski should withdraw those comments and apologise. Criticising officers who have just put themselves in harm’s way to stop further bloodshed is not principled politics - it is reckless, and he ought to be ashamed of himself.”

A Green Party spokesperson: “Zack has seen the video like everyone else, and doesn’t know the full picture and knows it was a very difficult situation for the authorities, but we do need to understand more about the response.”
