After nearly two decades at Grey Sloan Memorial,Kevin McKiddsays theemotional weight of leavingGrey’s Anatomydidn’t fully hit him until he boarded a plane home.

Following the season 22 finale on May 7 — which saw McKidd's character Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) leave Seattle together aftersurviving a catastrophic bridge collapse— McKidd tells PEOPLE he finally broke down after filming wrapped and he left Los Angeles for Scotland that same night.

“It all sort of washed over me on that flight back to Scotland,” McKidd says.

The emotional finale centered on a devastating bridge collapse that flooded Grey Sloan with victims and left Owen trapped inside a submerged car while Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) fought for his life in surgery.

After helping save an entire family during the disaster, Owen ultimately reconciles with Teddy, with the longtime couple deciding to move to Paris together for her work.

McKidd, who joined the ABC drama in 2008 and has directed nearly 45 episodes of the series — including the season 22 finale — says filming his final day on set became deeply emotional for both cast and crew.

“My kids came to set. My partner Danielle [Savre] came to set,” he recalls. “Quite a few cast members who weren’t shooting that day came out to see me because I think people realized it was a big moment. A big pivotal moment for the show.”

The actor says the support from the crew especially affected him.

“We had speeches and there was cake at the end and gifts given and tears shed,” McKidd says. “People gave me letters and cards expressing what their time working with me has been.”

“It really meant a lot to me that people went out of their way to come and spend time with me that day,” he continues.

But there was little time to fully process the goodbye.

McKidd says filming wrapped around 8 p.m. before he immediately headed to LAX and boarded an international flight just three hours later to begin work onHighlanderin Scotland and Spain alongsideHenry Cavill,Dave BautistaandRussell Crowe.

“I literally left this massive shoot and this ending of this huge chapter of my life and got on a plane,” he says. "It was so emotional for me because I'd been directing this big episode. I don’t think I’d given myself a chance to really feel anything about it all because I was so in the analytical and pragmatic side of my brain being the director." That's when he says, the emotional toll "washed over" him.

The whirlwind transition ultimately became strangely symbolic for the actor. “It sounds like the universe kind of said, ‘Here you go. Here’s your next chapter right here on the doorstep,’ ” McKidd says. “I feel very lucky. Sometimes the universe works in mysterious ways.”

Now, after recently wrapping the film, McKidd says he’s embracing an entirely new phase of his career. “I’m open to both,” he says of acting and directing. “Acting has always been my first love.”

At the same time, the actor says he’s excited to continue expanding his UK-based production company, Ferryman Films, which recently partnered with STV. “We’re moving towards green lights on quite a few projects,” he says.

McKidd also compares the experience of working onGrey’s Anatomyfor nearly 20 years to a masterclass in filmmaking.

“I feel like I graduated from the film school ofGrey’s Anatomy,” he says. “Now it’s time to go and let all that flourish and see what comes.”

Though Owen Hunt became one of the series’ most polarizing characters over the years, McKidd says he’s proud of where the trauma surgeon ultimately ended up.

“He was never designed to be this cozy, lovely character that everybody adored,” McKidd explains. “He was designed to create debate.”

But underneath Owen’s mistakes and volatility, the actor believes the character always represented something deeper.

“When we meet him, he’s basically a broken, traumatized war veteran,” McKidd says. “The saving of that family [on his final episode] kind of closes the loop of the platoon he lost in Iraq all those years ago.”

“He was able to save his family when he wasn’t able to save his family all those years ago,” he continues. “It healed that wound.”

For McKidd, that ultimately became the core message behind Owen’s ending.

“You can heal,” he says. “You can be traumatized from whatever you’re traumatized from, but you can heal, move forward and have a healthy life.”

Pope Leo hits back at Trump over claim he is ‘endangering Catholics’

Pope Leo has hit back at DonaldTrumpover his baseless claim that the pontiff is “endangeringCatholics” by supportingIran’s nuclear programme.

In his latest attack on the Pope, theUSPresident claimed over the weekend that the pontiff “thinks it’s fine for Iran to have a nuclear weapon” without providing evidence.

Speaking outside the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo, the Pope did not directly respond to Trump by name but said that the Catholic Church had always been opposed tonuclear weapons.

"The mission of the Church is to proclaim the Gospel, to preach peace," he said. "If someone wants to criticise me for proclaiming the Gospel, let them do so truthfully. For years, the Church has spoken out against all nuclear weapons, so there is no doubt on that point.”

The comments came ahead of a challenging meeting with US secretary of state Marco Rubio on Thursday. The US ambassador to the Holy See told reporters the meeting would include a “frank conversation” about the Trump administration’s policies.

“Nations have disagreements, and I think one of the ways that you work through those is ... through fraternity and authentic dialogue,” Brian Burch said. “I think the Secretary is coming here in that spirit, to have a frank conversation about U.S. policy, to engage in dialogue.”

Donald Trump and Pope Leo, the first US-born pope, clashed publicly last month over the president’s sabre-rattling amid the then-hot conflict with Iran.

The unprecedented rift between the US president and the head of the Catholic church saw Trump lambast the pontiff as being “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy”.

The comments drew sharp backlash from Christians across the political spectrum. Trump also faced criticism from his base for sharing an AI rendering of himself many took to be an imitation of Jesus. Trumps aid he thought he was portraying a doctor.

At the height of the dispute last month, vice president JD Vance, a Catholic, saidthe Pope should be “careful when he talks about matters of theology”.

The public disagreement forced a wedge between Trump and Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni, who had long been seen as a Trump ally in Europe.

Meloni called the comments “unacceptable” and expressed solidarity with Pope Leo. She said she would not feel comfortable in a society where religious leaders do what political leaders say.

Trump risked further alienating himself as he called Meloni “unacceptable” for her comments, adding that he was “shocked by her”.

“I thought she was brave, but I was wrong,” he said.

Rubio is expected to meet Meloni and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Friday. The State Department's Pigott said Rubio's meetings with the Italian officials "will be focused on shared security interests and strategic alignment."

How the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble began at UW-Manitowoc County in 1984

On Friday, Jan. 27, 1984, the Herald Times-Reporter announced that a campus/community band to be called the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble was in the process of being organized by Michael Arendt, associate professor of music at the University of Wisconsin Center-Manitowoc County.

Arendt extended an invitation to musicians in the area with the desire to play, but had no outlet to do so, or wanted an additional performing opportunity. Openings in every section of the band were available.

Interested persons could join at no charge, or receive one UW credit by formally enrolling in the ensemble as a UW class.

Early rehearsals: how to join and when the band met

Rehearsals were held on Tuesday evenings 7-9 p.m. from Jan. 31-May 15 in the band room at UWC-MC, 705 Viebahn St.

First Lakeshore Wind Ensemble concert: March 1984 program highlights

The first concert of the LWE was held at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 1984, in the Fine Arts Room at the UWC-MC campus. Admission was free.

The program began with Nicholas Rimpsky-Korsakov’s Procession of the Nobels, a grand march with a brass fanfare from the opera-ballet Mlada. This was followed by Pageant by Vincent Persichetti and Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, narrated by David Semmes, associate professor of communication arts at the Manitowoc campus.

After a short intermission, the ensemble played Felix Mendelssohn’s fiery Romantic masterpiece Piano Concerto No. 1 in G Minor (first movement) with a piano solo by Wesley Teply, lecturer in applied piano at the campus. Martin Mailman’s Liturgical Music for Band (four movements: Introit, Kyrie, Gloria, Alleluia) concluded the performance.

The audience was invited to attend a reception for the musicians immediately following the concert in the campus lounge.

Second concert in May 1984 featured Beethoven, Haydn and more

The second concert by the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble was held on Tuesday, May 15, 1984, also in the Fine Arts Room at campus. Selections included The Silver Quill concert march by Dale Harpham and Sammy Nestico, Ludvig van Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Franz Joseph Haydn’s Concerto for Trumpet, with a trumpet solo by Brian H. Hanes, Roncalli High School’s band director.

1984-85 season: fall rehearsals and November-December concerts

Following the summer break, LWE rehearsals for the 1984-85 season were again advertised and new members were invited to join. Fall semester rehearsals resumed on Sept. 11 until Dec. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the band room at UWC-MC.

The first concert of the new season was held on Thursday, Nov. 1, 1984. The performance featured John Philip Sousa’s The Fairest of the Fair March, Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E Flat and C. M. von Weber’s Concertino Op. 26 with clarinet soloist Jill Hanes, principal clarinetist with LWE and the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra. A Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 9 featured A Carol Festival with an audience sing-along.

European tour plans: 1985 concerts and later international trips

In November 1984, the LWE announced plans for a two-week European tour of concerts and sightseeing in June 1985. During its first concert tour, the band visited Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) and Switzerland.

In later years, Professor Arendt led six other tours abroad with concerts in France, Italy, Scandinavia, Slovakia, Russia, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Japan, Ireland and Great Britain.

LWE conductors, independence in 2020 and a 42-year legacy

Arendt conducted the LWE for 30 years until 2014. Other conductors have included Dr. Daniel Ackley (2014-15) and Dr. Marc Sackman (2016-20). The current conductor and music director is Jeremiah Eis.

The LWE became fully private and independent of the university system in June 2020.

'The Bear' Announces Final Season Premiere Date

The FX and Hulu comedy-dramaThe Bear, starring Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, made a welcome return last June, but its intimate finale left fans spinning witha big question: Is Carmy leaving his restaurant, and if so, can it survive without him? And even if the restaurantcanmanage without its namesake chef, willThe Bear,as a series, continue? Luckily, we finally have an answer to at least one of those questions.

Here’s what we know about the future ofThe Bearso far.

Will there be a season 5 ofThe Bear?

Yes, chef. FX announced in July 2025 that the hit series will return for a fifth season, set for 2026.

“The Bearcontinues to be a fan favorite worldwide and their response to this season—as seen through incredibly high viewership—has been as spectacular as any of its previous seasons,” FX Chairman John Landgraf said in a statement. “Year-in and year-out, Chris Storer, the producers, cast and crew makeThe Bearone of the best shows on television, and we are excited that they will continue to tell this magnificent story.”

Season 5 will also be the show’s last, according toThe Bearactress Jamie Lee Curtis, who dropped the news during a March 2026 interview withAccess Hollywood. “Everybody’s confirmed the show is ending,” she said. “I don’t understand why that’s such a [big deal]…unless I’m gonna get a call from all the people saying, ‘You just told [everyone].’

In November 2025, White confirmed that the show was originally set to end with season 4. “The fourth season was going to be the last,” he revealed on an episode ofThe Hollywood Reporter’sAwards Chatterpodcast. “Chris [Storer] called me on Christmas Eve last year and was like, ‘We’re gonna do some more.’ And, I don’t know, that could happen again around this holiday time. There’s no plans for it to be the last. There’s no plans right now for us to do more. I think it’s just all dependent on what Chris wants to do. But if it was up to me? I just feel so lucky to read Chris’ words, and also to work with these actors who’ve become some of my best friends, so I’d do it for a very long time.”

When willThe Bearseason 5 be released?

FX confirmed that the final season ofThe Bearwill air on June 25, 2026 at 9 P.M. ET / 6 P.M. PT on FX and Hulu.

All eight episodes will begin streaming on Hulu at once. On FX, the first two episodes will air on the premiere date, followed by one new episode airing weekly.

A special flashback episode, in which Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Mikey (Jon Bernthal) take a work trip to Gary, Indiana, arrived on May 5.

Season 4 ends with Carmy (White) announcing he is making exit plans: He wants to leave The Bear behind once things have stabilized behind the scenes. She proposes that Richie (Moss-Bachrach) and Carmy’s sister, Natalie (Abby Elliott), join Sydney as partners in The Bear.

On May 6, FX confirmed that Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Matty Matheson, with Ricky Staffieri, Oliver Platt, Will Poulter, and Jamie Lee Curtis in recurring roles in addition to White, Elliot, Edibiri, and Moss-Bachrach. But we’ll have to see whether FX adds any new cast members. Watch this space for more news as it arrives.

WillThe Bearend with season 5?

Sadly, yes. After Curtis’s remarks fueled speculation, FX confirmed that the fifth season ofThe Bearwill indeed be the show’s last.

Curtis previously toldAccess Hollywood, “I think everybody [in the cast] understood that it was the last season of the show.”

White also recently addressed questions about how longThe Bearwould realistically continue. In a January 2026 interview withDeadline, White said he could see himself staying with the show for “a long time.” However, the actor also emphasized, “I know it’s hard to maintain the continuity and the level of storytelling when you go for that long. But it’s difficult. I love that cast so much...I love Carmy so much. I could do it for a long time, but I don’t know how much longer we’ll do it for.”
