“Bewitched” child star Erin Murphy says Elizabeth Montgomery 'wasn't necessarily as soft and kind as Samantha'

Erin Murphy, who played Tabitha on Bewitched, describes how her TV mom, Elizabeth Montgomery, was "nothing" like her character Samantha.

Key Points

  • Unlike the suburban housewife, Montgomery was "the furthest thing from a stay-at-home mom," reveals Murphy.

  • When her TV husband, Dick York, left the show after five seasons "she never spoke to him again."

To millions of TV viewers,Elizabeth Montgomerywas bewitching as Samantha Stephens, a suburban housewife with supernatural powers. Offscreen, she was just as magical, albeit in a very different way than her beloved character.

"She was nothing like Samantha," revealedErin Murphy, who played Montgomery's TV daughter Tabitha, onThe Magnificent Others With Bill Corgan. "Just like in a weird way, Lucille Ball was notI Love Lucy, even though that's who we love and that's who we kind of want them to be."

Montgomery, who was married toBewitcheddirector William Asher, "and Lucy were businesswomen actively involved with the production of their show," continued Murphy, now 61. "She was at a point in her life where she didn't want to do movies. She had a family, but she wasn't a stay-at-home mom."

In fact, Montgomery, whose second and third pregnancies were written into the show, was "the furthest thing from a stay-at-home mom. She was on set working all day and they had a nanny," added Murphy.

Another misconception about the actress was how "motherly" she treated her onscreen daughter when the cameras weren't rolling.

"I also saw her side where, um, she wasn't necessarily as soft and kind as Samantha," Murphy admitted to Corgan. "She was a businesswoman and she was serious and definitely had that side. She was also, and I've said this, she had a very dirty sense of humor, and so do I. I know I got that from her."

Bewitchedended in 1972 after its eighth season, despite being picked up byABCfor a ninth, because Montgomery and Asher separated during the hiatus.

She continued to send Christmas cards after the show went off the air, but "that was it" as far as continuing a close relationship with her TV family.

"She did a job and left the job and that was it," said Murphy. "She never talked to Dick York after he left the set" after five seasons due to debilitating back pain. "There's some lovely stories out there on social media about how she showed up when he was dying — no, he left the show and she never spoke to him again."

Murphy was quite the opposite. On the set, she had befriended Montgomery's children and maintained the relationships long after the show ended. And any time she visited the family home, she was surprised to see "there were no pictures ofBewitched," she revealed to Corgan.

"There would be, you know, photos from other jobs, but noBewitchedphotos. I know she liked the show," Murphy said of Montgomery, who died in 1995. "She was actively involved… but it was a job and she moved on."

What led Dave Allen to Filip Hrgovic? The unique logic behind a daunting test

Over the years,Dave Allenhas gone by two monikers. The “White Rhino” feels fitting; the species is sadly endangered, and boxers like Allen are a true rarity. But what of the “Doncaster De La Hoya”?

The Independent

While it’s not an actual comparison between Allen and American icon Oscar, the intentional irony of the nickname does distil a British humour that has been key to the heavyweight’s emergence as a cult hero.

And that status has only been enhanced over the last two years. In 2024, when Allen was matched with his former sparring partnerJohnny Fisher– who has his own fiercely loyal fanbase – the intention was clear. Promoter Eddie Hearn was trying to give Fisher an appropriate test after the youngster had eviscerated Alen Babic. “Trying” is the operative word here, though.

Dave Allen (left) facing off with Filip Hrgovic ahead of their heavyweight bout on DAZN (Queensberry Promotions)

Although Fisher got the win, the match-up was seen as having backfired on the boxer and the Matchroom chief. Fisher was dropped and was arguably fortunate to get the nod on the judges’ scorecards. Yet Hearn pivoted shrewdly last spring, and the promotion of the rematch saw him position himself almost equally alongside both fighters.

And when Allen dropped Fisher twice in the rematch, forcing a stoppage this time, Hearn was quick to sign the 34-year-old.

Hearn did not abandon Fisher, to be clear, but he pushed Allen and capitalised on the veteran’s unique appeal with hardcore boxing fans.

It was not an entirely new connection, though. “Eddie’s cool,” Allen toldPro Boxing Fansafter signing with the 46-year-old’s company. “I rung him in 2022; I needed some advice about something not even boxing-related. I think I’d had two four-rounders in three years. I messaged him on Instagram and said: ‘Mate, I need you to ring me, please. I need some advice.’ And he rung within about 30 seconds, and that stuck with me.

“Another time, I was meant to box and the fight fell through. It was no fault of his, [but] he came and gave me some money. He said, ‘Look, you’re not boxing, you’re not getting paid,’ and gave me some money. There have been times when it hasn’t been so good, but it’s little things like that... I don’t forget them."

It was a plainly sincere message from Allen, who so often opts for humour.

That brings us toFilip Hrgovic.

“He’s a bit like... you know Zac Efron’s character inHigh School Musical?” Allen askedQueensberrythis week, as heprepares to face the Croaton a show co-promoted by Frank Warren’s company and Matchroom. “A bit of an asshole, a bit of a jock, like the handsome guy that knows he’s handsome and just... he knows it, don’t he? He knows, the boy; he knows he can fight.”

Untangling the misconceptions around the nuanced characteristics of Efron’s Troy Bolton is a task for another article. Still, Allen’s words showcased his unusual perspective on the boxing business.

Hearn highlighted that perspective last summer, while talking toiFL TVabout Allen’s impending fight withArslanbek Makhmudov.

Allen with promoter Eddie Hearn (Getty)

“Dave is one of the strangest men I’ve ever met,” Hearn said. “He goes, ‘I want to fight someone really dangerous.’ I’m like: ‘But you know the money’s the same, because your money’s contracted now.’

“[Allen said:] ‘Yeah, but if I fight someone really dangerous, I might train harder, because I’ll be scared.’ I’m like: ‘Mate, Dave, can’t you just train hard anyway?’ [He said:] ‘No, I need to be scared.’

“I sent him a list of like four or five fighters [...] and he’s chose the biggest puncher and the most dangerous one off the whole list.”

In Sheffield in October, Allen was outpointed by Makhmudov in what could have marked the end of his career resurgence.A late flurry by Allen showed what could have been that night, though, and that frustration fuelled his next outing: a 57-second demolition of Karim Berredjem.

Allen salutes his fans after his defeat by Arslanbek Makhmudov in October (Getty)

That February win over Berredjem could have been the start of another rebuild – the next incline on the rollercoaster that has been Allen’s career – but the Doncaster De La Hoya has opted for danger again. On Saturday, he faces his toughest test yet in Hrgovic, who ventures into Allen’s own backyard for a headline bout at the Eco Power Stadium.

Hrgovic (19-1, 14 KOs) is a heavy favourite, and understandably so. The 33-year-old’s sole defeat was a doctor stoppage by Daniel Dubois in 2024, after a bullying start by Hrgovic, who holds wins over Zhilei Zhang, Joe Joyce, David Adeleye and Demsey McKean.

Why did Allen (25-8-2, 20 KOs) choose Hrgovic, then? Based on the same unique logic that led him to Makhmudov, it seems: Allen believes fear will make him a better fighter. And on Saturday, he must be the best he’s ever been.

Wearing all black, the five-time Super Bowl MVP strolledinto Los Angeles' Kia Forum to throwsome bombs two years after Kevin Hart hosted"The Greatest Roast of All Time: The Roast of Tom Brady"in the same arena in May 2024. Brady was brutal on Hart during his brief cameo appearance.

"Have you even left The Forum?"Bradyasked Hart after his unbilled entrance, "Or have you just been here screaming into that light for the last two years, waiting for Daddy to come home? Well, unlike your real dad, I actually showed up. And I brought you a jersey."

Here's what thePatriots Hall of Famersaid.

Brady then presented the diminutive Hart with a mini-New York Knicks jersey. "That's newborn size," Brady said. "It fits you."

Hart was an infamously harsh host of the 2024 Brady roast, which the former superstar NFL quarterback has not forgotten.

"You said, 'Time to get comfortable with being uncomfortable,'" Brady said onstage, mocking Hart as host. "Who's squirming in the highchair now? Put a pillow under there to make you look taller."

Brady took issue with the "Jumanji" star Hart following him in the Netflix roast saga.

"I played in the NFL for 23 seasons, but I've never seen anyone drop the ball like this," said Brady. "How did the GOAT roast go from me to you? I won seven Super Bowls; Kevin has made two 'Ride Along' movies. I've won five Super Bowl MVP awards. Kevin, you're the third most famous person in 'Jumanji.'"

Brady then ripped into Hart's 2026 roasters, who included host Shane Gillis, NBA star Draymond Green, Chelsea Handler, and lesser-known comics such as Sheryl Underwood and Big Jay Oakerson.

"Who are these people and how did they get here? I thought they shutdown Spirit Airlines,"said Brady, who called the celebrity line-up "pathetic."

Brady landed a double NFL jab with a joke about Philadelphia native Hart's love of the NFL Eagles.

"We've got some real Eagles fans here, not like Kevin, who shows up for the big games when the Eagles are playing well," said Brady. "We have a name for these fans, they're called 'Cowboys fans.'"

Brady made a move at Hart's wife in the audience

Hart made jokes about Brady's family at the 2024 roast, and Brady returned the favor in 2026.

"Kevin, you took a lot of shots at my family in the roast. But I'm too classy to go after your beautiful wife. Or am I?" Brady asked. He located Eniko Hart in the audience and asked smoothly, "What's up, girl?"

The comment prompted Hart to yell, "Cut it out!" from his seat.

Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte Impeached, Again

The Philippines’ House of Representatives impeached Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday—for thesecond time—over accusations of unexplained wealth, misuse of state funds, and threats to have herformer allyPresidentFerdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.assassinated.

Time

The second impeachment came more than nine months after the country’s Supreme Court voided the first over a constitutional technicality, but the top court’s decision did not prevent any future attempts.

After deliberations, there were 255 votes cast in favor of impeaching Duterte, more than the required third of House members. With the House vote on Monday, Duterte, who comes from one of the country’smost prominent political dynasties, became the first official in the Southeast Asian country’s history to be impeached twice.

Duterte will face trial before the Philippine Senate, which observers say is the real battleground: “The manner in which the impeachment trial will play out before the public will shape how voters will look at her candidacy,” Jean Encinas-Franco, a political science professor at the University of the Philippines, tells TIME.

A strong pro-Duterte bloc sits in the Senate. After the House impeached the Vice President for the first time last year, the Senate effectively shelved the proceedings, referring to the Supreme Court ruling. This year, as the House deliberated on Duterte’s impeachment, a majority of Senators suddenly elected a known ally of the Duterte family as Senate President, who has denied that the impeachment influenced the shake-up.

In February, Duterteannouncedshe would run for President in the 2028 national elections. Shecontinues to lead in public opinion pollingabout who could succeed Marcos, as Philippine Presidents are constitutionally limited to a single six-year term. Duterte joined Marcos’ ticket to secure a landslide victory in the 2022 national elections, but the two have since become political rivals, fomenting a feud that has thrown the country into political and economic turmoil.

A guilty verdict at the Senate could spell political doom for Duterte, the daughter of former Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte, who is in theInternational Criminal Court’s custody as he faces a trial overa nationwide drug war that caused thousands of deaths during his term.

If found guilty, the Vice President will be removed from her post and could be barred from public office. However, Manila-based political scientist Cleve Arguelles tells TIME that the impeachment could in actuality consolidate Duterte’s political constituency, “potentially strengthening loyalty among supporters and preserving her viability for 2028.”

The Vice President has alleged that the impeachment proceedings against her are politically motivated and has denied any wrongdoing.

Duterte is the highest‑ranking official to be impeached in the Philippines since formerPresident Joseph Estrada in 2000, though that impeachment trial was aborted after prosecutors walked out. Estrada resigned months later.

Of the five impeached public officials in the country’s history, including Duterte, only one—a former Supreme Court Chief Justice—has been convicted.
