BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq's prime minister presided over the official reopening of the historic al-Nuri Grand Mosque and its leaning minaret in the heart of Mosul's Old City Monday, eight years after the mosque wasdestroyed by militantsfrom the Islamic State group. For some 850 years, the leaning minaret of the mosque stood as an iconic landmark. In 2014, IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the so-called "caliphate" there by delivering a Friday sermon and leading prayers. The militant group later destroyed the mosque bydetonating explosivesinside the structures as it faced defeat in a battle with Iraqi military forces for control of the city in 2017. UNESCO, the U.N.'s scientific, educational and cultural organization, worked alongside Iraqi heritage and Sunni religious authorities to reconstruct the minaret using traditional techniques and materials salvaged from the rubble. UNESCO raised $115 million for the reconstruction project, with large shares coming from the United Arab Emirates and the European Union. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said in a statement that the reconstruction of the mosque "will remain a milestone, reminding all enemies of the heroism of Iraqis, their defense of their land, and their rebuilding of everything destroyed by those who want to obscure the truth." "We will continue our support for culture, and efforts to highlight Iraqi antiquities, as a social necessity, a gateway to our country for the world, an opportunity for sustainable development, and a space for youth to innovate," he said. At its peak, IS ruled an area half the size of the United Kingdom in Iraq and Syria and was notorious for its brutality. It beheaded civilians and enslaved and raped thousands of women from the Yazidi community, one of Iraq's oldest religious minorities. In addition to the mosque, war-damaged churches were rebuilt as part of the reconstruction project, aiming to preserve the heritage of the city's shrinking Christian population. Sudani said the city of Mosul embraces all of its communities and "embodies all the characteristics of Iraq's diverse society." U.N. investigators have said that IS militants committedwar crimesagainst Christians in Iraq, including seizing their property, engaging in sexual violence, enslavement, forced conversions and destruction of cultural and religious sites. Most of Mosul's small population ofChristiansfled when IS launched its offensive in 2014. In 2003, Mosul's Christian population stood at around 50,000. Today, fewer than 20 Christian families remain as permanent residents in the city, although some who resettled in the semi-autonomous Kurdish area of northern Iraq still return to Mosul for church services. Desperate Afghans clawed through rubble in the dead of the night in search of missing loved ones after a strong earthquake killed some 800 people and injured more than 2,500 in eastern Afghanistan, according to figures provided Monday by the Taliban government. The 6.0 magnitude quake late Sunday hit towns in the province of Kunar, near the city of Jalalabad in neighboring Nangarhar province, causing extensive damage. The quake at 11:47 p.m. was centered 17 miles east-northeast of Jalalabad, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was just 5 miles deep. Shallower quakes tend to cause more damage. Several aftershocks followed. (MORE:Hurricane Center Tracking New Area In Atlantic) Footage showed rescuers taking injured people on stretchers from collapsed buildings and into helicopters as people frantically dug through rubble with their hands. A Taliban government spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said at a press conference Monday that the death toll had risen to at least 800 with more than 2,500 injured. He said most of the casualties were in Kunar. Buildings in Afghanistan tend to be low-rise constructions, mostly of concrete and brick, with homes in rural and outlying areas made from mud bricks and wood. Many are poorly built. One resident in Nurgal district, one of the worst-affected areas in Kunar, said nearly the entire village was destroyed. "Children are under the rubble. The elderly are under the rubble. Young people are under the rubble," said the villager, who did not give his name. "We need help here," he pleaded. "We need people to come here and join us. Let us pull out the people who are buried. The quake has worsened communications. Dozens of flights have operated in and out of Nangarhar Airport, transporting the injured to hospital. One survivor described seeing homes collapse before his eyes and people screaming for help. Sadiqullah, who lives in the Maza Dara area of Nurgal, said he was woken by a deep boom that sounded like a storm approaching. Like many Afghans, he uses only one name. He ran to where his children were sleeping and rescued three of them. He was about to return to grab the rest of his family when the room fell on top of him. "I was half-buried and unable to get out," he told The Associated Press by phone from Nangarhar Hospital. "My wife and two sons are dead, and my father is injured and in hospital with me. We were trapped for three to four hours until people from other areas arrived and pulled me out." It felt like the whole mountain was shaking, he said. Rescue operations were underway and medical teams from Kunar, Nangarhar and the capital Kabul have arrived in the area, said Sharafat Zaman, a health ministry spokesman. Zaman said many areas had not been able to report casualty figures and that "the numbers were expected to change" as deaths and injuries are reported. The Taliban government's chief spokesman, Mujahid, said "all available resources will be utilized to save lives." Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said the earthquake intensified existing humanitarian challenges in Afghanistan and urged international donors to support relief efforts. "This adds death and destruction to other challenges including drought and the forced return of millions of Afghans from neighbouring countries," Grandi wrote on the social media platform X. "Hopefully the donor community will not hesitate to support relief efforts." Sunday night's quake was felt in parts of Pakistan, including the capital Islamabad. There were no reports of casualties or damage. The Afghan city of Jalalabad, close to Pakistan, is a bustling trade center and a key border crossing. Although it has a population of about 300,000 according to the municipality, its metropolitan area is thought to be far larger. Jalalabad also has considerable agriculture, including citrus fruit and rice farming, with the Kabul River flowing through the city. A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2023, followed by strong aftershocks. The Taliban government estimated at least 4,000 people perished in that quake. The U.N. gave a far lower death toll of about 1,500. It was the deadliest natural disaster to strike Afghanistan in recent memory. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he was deeply saddened by events in Afghanistan. "Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We are ready to extend all possible support in this regard," he said on the social platform X. Pakistan has expelled thousands of Afghans in the past year, many of them living legally in the country after escaping Afghanistan as refugees over the past four decades. At least 1.2 million Afghans have been forced to return to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan so far this year, according to a June report by UNHCR.

The Trump administration has repeatedly claimed that he is a member of the dangerous Salvadoran gang known as MS-13 and should not be allowed to stay here. In August, immigration officials said theyintend to send him to Uganda.His family and attorneys deny that he has any gang connections andsay he is being punishedfor fighting for his constitutional rights. They are seeking his release and to stop his deportation. Abrego, 30, has found himself in the middle of Trump's crackdown on immigration as his legal battles highlight the new deportation policies the administration has sought to use. The Salvadoran father of three is currently enmeshed in several court cases. Most recently, he applied for asylum in immigration court after he was returned to the U.S. His lawyers have also filed a lawsuit to ensure his right to due process as his deportation case continues. That case is being heard by a federal judge in Maryland, Paula Xinis. Finally, he has a federal criminal case in Tennessee, where prosecutors have charged him with human trafficking. He has pleaded not guilty. Here are the latest updates on what could happen to Abrego and how this all unfolded. Most recently, on Aug. 25, Abrego's attorneys asked an immigration judge for protection from deportation amid threats bythe Trump administration to send him to the African nation of Uganda, a country to which he has no ties. Abrego filed the case with Baltimore's immigration court in the hopes of being granted asylum or a withholding of removal to Uganda, if an immigration judge determines there is a credible threat to his life if he is sent there. He applied for asylum when he first arrived in the U.S. but that request was denied in 2019 because Abrego had missed the one-year deadline to file. A judge, however, ruled that he specifically could not be deported to El Salvador because of credible threats he faced from gangs there. His attorneys argue that he's now able toreapply for asylumbecause he exited the country — when he was deported — and re-entered, which started a new one-year clock. Abrego cannot be deported to El Salvador, but that still leaves the door open to being deported to some other country, a policy pursued by Trump. In August, the administration suggested sending him to Uganda, which has agreed to take in deportees from the U.S. if they have no criminal record and aren't an unaccompanied minor. Abrego also has a case beforeXinis, the federal judge in Maryland.In that case, his attorneys are seeking to ensure his due process rights are protected as they attempt to stop his deportation. Last week,Xinis ordered that Abrego remain in the U.S., temporarily blocking his deportation to Uganda, and set an evidentiary hearing for mid-October. Her order also said that Abrego should remain in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement within 200 miles of the court in Greenbelt, Maryland, until she is able to rule on his petition by mid-October. That prevents Abrego from being sent to a state like Louisiana, where the courts tend to have a higher denial rate for immigrants seeking protections. Oct. 6: Judge Xinis will hold an evidentiary hearing in Abrego's case, which is expected to include witness testimony. Mid-October: Xinis has indicated she could rule in his case sometime around then. Xinis' decision could determine if Abrego remains in detention as his immigration case plays out. In the meantime, Abrego remains at a Virginia detention center — about 200 miles from the Maryland courthouse. The Trump administration's effortsto deport Abrego to Ugandacould have larger implications for its policy of deportations to "third countries." Rwanda, Costa Rica, El Salvador and others have agreements with the U.S. to accept deportees. Federal prosecutors said that if he pleaded guilty to human trafficking charges in a federal criminal case brought against him in June in Tennessee, and served a maximum of 10 years in prison, he could instead be deported to Costa Rica, which said it would receive him as a refugee and allow him to live freely. An attorney for Abrego said he would not accept the plea deal, as he "will not accept charges of which he's not guilty." Abrego's detention in the U.S. and the Trump administration's attempt to deport him to a "third country" follow months of political firestorm. He was first deported to El Salvador in March because of what officials described as an"administrative error" that was in violation of the 2019 court order. Abrego was sent along with hundreds of people,most of them from Venezuela, to a notorious Salvadoran megaprison. The fight for his return sparkeda legal back-and-forththat involved theSupreme Court, which ruled in Aprilthat the federal government had to facilitate Abrego's return. The decision was a high-profile blow to the administration. After much resistance from the Trump administration, he wasreturned to the U.S. in June and immediately hit with human smuggling chargesout of Tennessee. He has pleaded not guilty and denied the allegations. The charges accuse him of transporting people who were not legally in the United States. Abrego was pulled over in Tennessee in 2022 while driving a van transporting several others, but was not charged with anything at the time. He has said he was helping transport workers and denied the charges. After being returned to the U.S. from El Salvador on June 6, Abrego was immediately placed in federal custody in Tennessee. He was thenreleased from federal custody on paroleon Aug. 22 — leading to a tearful reunion with his family after more than 160 days apart. He was only free for three days. Abrego was told on the Friday he was released that he needed to appear for an immigration check-in on the following Monday. As his attorneys expected, he was taken into ICE custody and hours later sent to a detention center in Virginia on Aug. 25. Abrego's conflicts with the Trump administration began on March 12, when he was pulled over by ICE officers while driving with his son on his way home from a worksite in Baltimore. He was on the phone with his wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, and told her he had pulled into the parking lot of an Ikea when an officer "put his lights on." When an officer got to Abrego's car, according to Vasquez Sura, they told him to roll down the windows and step out of the vehicle. Abrego told the officer his son was in the back seat and had special needs. In a sworn declaration, she said officers then hung up the call, and minutes later someone called back, identified themself as a person with the Department of Homeland Security, and told her she needed to get there in 10 minutes to pick up her son or they would "call child protective services." When she arrived, she said, Abrego was on the curb in handcuffs, and officers on the scene claimed his "immigration status had changed," Vasquez Sura has said. He was arrested by immigration authorities and transferred to facilities in Maryland, Louisiana and Texas, the sworn declaration said. On March 15, three days after being pulled over, he was flown to El Salvador.

It's also where she was buried, on a small island in the middle of the ornamental Round Oval lake. Though Spencer's post may be short, it's incredibly touching to see him choosing flowers from around their shared home to honor her with. While undoubtedly a happier occasion to acknowledge, it is surely a bittersweet day for Spencer as well. Although this year he chose to honor what would have been Diana's 64th birthday with a very celebratory photo indeed. If you recall, Wendi played Marie, a Winnepegian hotel concierge that hooks up withSteve CarellonThe Office's season 5 episode "Business Trip." Though she shot her (very memorable) scenes rather quickly, her time onThe Officeset was sandwiched between two slaps in the face. I was there one night, got in the passenger van to go to set, and the money guy decided I was not pretty enough to do the role. So I was put on a plane crying to go right back to L.A." After gasps, forehead smacking and a "Holy crap!" from Fischer, McLendon-Covey decided to rise above the incident and not mention the name of the film or the "money guy" who fired her. She even framed the story in a positive way. "It was pretty brutal and yet a blessing because that movie went nowhere," she added. "And I would have had to be in Michigan for seven weeks waiting to film for only five days, on intermittent days." She theorized that "sometimes you're in the wrong place, and something horrible has to happen to get you in the right place." And that right place was with Michael Scott. "When I land in L.A.," she explained, "I look at my phone, and my phone's blowing up because I had gotten an offer to doThe Office.The next day. So thank god I got fired, right? Because nobody saw that movie, but everybody saw this." Mic drop! NBC McLendon-Covey then talked about how much fun it was to work with (and kiss) Steve Carell, but added that there were other troubles happening in her career at the time. "[We began on] a Friday. The weekend goes on. Monday, I come back, and during lunch, I'm in my trailer eating. I get a call that I'm not gonna be onRenoanymore," she said. "So, I am sobbing in my trailer. I was like, ugh. Cate Blanchett's newest movie, "Father Mother Sister Brother" from indie auteur Jim Jarmusch, premiered at Venice Film Festival on Sunday night to a five-minute standing ovation. Blanchett, who plays a pair of sisters with Vicky Krieps in the slice-of-life tale of three different families, positively beamed as the applause roared in the Sala Grande theater. As the credits rolled, director Jarmusch paused to give each of his leading ladies — including Blanchett, Krieps, Charlotte Rampling, Mayim Bialik and Indya Moore — a kiss on the hand. Luka Sabbat was representing the men in the film at the premiere, as Adam Driver and Tom Waits — who play a father and son in the film — were unable to attend. After five minutes of clapping, the director gave a nod to his cast and they began to file out of the theater. The premiere marks Jarmusch's first time on the Lido in 22 years since debuting "Coffee & Cigarettes" at the festival in 2003. A Cannes regular, Jarmusch has presented many films on the Croisette, including "The Dead Don't Die" in 2019, which played on opening night. Producers on "Father Mother Sister Brother" are Charles Gillibert ("Annette"), Joshua Astrachan, Carter Logan and Atilla Salih Yücer. The film is produced by Saint Laurent Prods., Mubi and the Apartment (a Fremantle company) with Jarmusch's Badjetlag and Gillibert's CG Cinema. Ireland's Richard Bolger and Conor Barry of Hail Mary co-produced. The film was also backed by Fís Éireann/ Screen Ireland and received equity financing from Cinema Inutile. Rudy Giulianiis recovering from a fractured vertebra and other injuries following a car crash in New Hampshire in which he was a passenger, a spokesperson for the former New York City mayor said Sunday. Giuliani was being driven in a rented Ford Bronco by his spokesperson Ted Goodman when their vehicle was struck from behind by a Honda HR-V driven by a 19-year-old woman late Saturday evening, New Hampshire State Police said in a statement. Troopers witnessed the crash, which caused both vehicles to hit the highway median and left them "heavily damaged," state police said. Goodman and the 19-year-old suffered "non-life-threatening injuries" and were taken to hospitals for treatment, the agency added. State police said they are investigating the crash and no charges have been filed. Giuliani, 81, was taken to a nearby trauma center and was being treated for a fractured thoracic vertebra, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg, according to a statement posted on X by Michael Ragusa, Giuliani's head of security. Giuliani "sustained injuries but is in good spirits and recovering tremendously," Ragusa said, adding: "This was not a targeted attack." Prior to the accident, Giuliani had been "flagged down by a woman who was the victim of a domestic violence incident" and contacted police assistance on her behalf, Ragusa said. After police arrived, Giuliani continued on his way and his vehicle was hit shortly after pulling onto the highway in a crash that was "entirely unrelated" to the domestic violence incident, Ragusa told The Associated Press in an emailed statement. State police said troopers were investigating a domestic violence report on the southbound Interstate 93 highway shortly before 10 p.m. and observed the crash, which occurred on the northbound lanes. Troopers and fire personnel quickly crossed to provide help. New Hampshire State Police declined to comment on whether Giuliani had contacted the agency regarding the account of a domestic violence incident. Goodman did not respond to requests for comment and Giuliani's team did not provide additional details about the circumstances surrounding the crash. "Thank you to all the people that have reached out since learning the news about my Father," Andrew Giuliani, Rudy Giuliani's son, wrote in a post on X. "Your prayers mean the world." The crash follows some rocky years for the onetime Republican presidential candidate, who wasdubbed "America's mayor"in light of his leadership in New York after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001. Giuliani later becamePresident Donald Trump's personal attorney for a time and a vocal proponent of Trump's allegations of fraud in the 2020 election, won by Democrat Joe Biden. SEOUL (Reuters) -North Korean leader Kim Jong Un left Pyongyang by train on Monday on his way to Beijing, Yonhap news agency reported, relying on a slow but specialised form of transport that the reclusive country's leaders have used for decades. It was not clear which train he used, but in the past he has used bulletproof trains that offer a safer and more comfortable space for a large entourage, security guards, food and amenities, and a place to discuss agendas ahead of meetings, experts say. Since becoming leader in late 2011, Kim has used a train to visit China, Vietnam, and Russia. WHAT'S INSIDE THE TRAINS? It is unclear how many trains North Korean leaders have used over the years, but Ahn Byung-min, a South Korean expert on North Korean transportation, has said multiple trains were needed for security reasons. Ahn said those trains have 10 to 15 carriages each, some of which are used only by the leader, such as a bedroom, but others carry security guards and medical staff. They also usually have space for Kim's office, communications equipment, a restaurant, and several car transportation carriages for two armoured Mercedes, he added. A video released in 2018 by North Korean state TV showed Kim meeting with top Chinese officials in a wide train car ringed with pink couches. The video also showed the carriage housing Kim's office, with a desk and chair, and a map of China and the Korean peninsula on the wall behind it. In 2020, state TV footage showed Kim riding a train to visit a typhoon-hit area, offering a glimpse of a carriage decorated with flower-shaped lighting and zebra-printed fabric chairs. In the 2002 book "Orient Express", Russian official Konstantin Pulikovsky described a three-week journey to Moscow by Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un's father and predecessor. In that train, cases of Bordeaux and Beaujolais wine were flown in from Paris, as were live lobsters, according to the book. HOW DOES IT CROSS BORDERS? When Kim Jong Un took the train to Russia, including in 2023 for a summit with President Vladimir Putin, its wheel assemblies had to be reconfigured at a border station because the two countries use different rail gauges, Ahn said. While there is no such requirement for China, a Chinese locomotive pulls the train once it crosses the border, because a local engineer knows the rail system and signals, said Kim Han-tae, a South Korean former train engineer who has written a book on North Korea's railways. To travel to previous summits with Xi, Kim's specially equipped string of train carriages was usually hauled by matching green DF11Z locomotives, Chinese-made engines sporting the emblem of the state-owned China Railway Corporation, with at least three different serial registration numbers, according to a review of media images. Ahn noted the serial numbers were either 0001 or 0002, suggesting China was providing him with engines reserved for the most senior officials. And when Kim travelled across China to his 2019 summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Vietnam, his train was pulled by a red-and-yellow locomotive emblazoned with China's national railway logo. The train can reach speeds of up to 80 kph (50 mph) on China's network, compared with a maximum of about 45 kph (28 mph) on North Korea's tracks, Ahn said. WHO USES THE TRAINS? North Korea's founding leader, Kim Il Sung, Kim's grandfather, travelled abroad by train regularly during his rule until his death in 1994. Kim Jong Il relied solely on trains to visit Russia three times, including a 20,000 km trip to Moscow in 2001. He died of a reported heart attack in late 2011 while on one of his trains and the carriage is on display at his mausoleum. The train has been at the centre of state propaganda around the ruling Kim family's embarking on long train journeys to meet ordinary North Koreans across the country. In 2022 state television showed Kim Jong Un taking what it termed an "exhaustive train tour" around North Korea to inspect corn crops and promote a "communist utopia". THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The largest professional organization of scholars studying genocide said Monday that Israel is committing genocidein Gaza. The determination by the International Association of Genocide Scholars — which has around 500 members worldwide, including a number of Holocaust experts — could serve to further isolate Israel in global public opinion and adds to agrowing chorusof organizations that have used the term for Israel's actions in Gaza. Israel has repeatedly rejected the accusation. "Israel's policies and actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide," as well as crimes against humanity and war crimes, according to group's resolution, which was supported by 86% of those who voted. The organization did not release the specifics of the voting. "People who are experts in the study of genocide can see this situation for what it is," Melanie O'Brien, the organization's president and a professor of international law at the University of Western Australia, told The Associated Press. Genocide was codifiedin a 1948 convention drawn up after the horrors of the Holocaust that defines it as acts "committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group." The United Nations and many Western countries have said only a court can rule on whether the crime has been committed. A case against Israel is before the U.N.'s highest court. Israel — founded in part as a refuge in the wake of the Holocaust, when some 6 million European Jews were murdered — has vehemently denied it is committing genocide. It has called the accusation an antisemitic "blood libel," and said thatHamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attackthat sparked the war was itself a genocidal act. In that attack, Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251.Forty-eight hostagesremain in Gaza, around 20 of whom Israel believes are alive. The scholars organization's resolution begins with an acknowledgment that the attack "constitutes international crimes." Israel's Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In Israel's offensive since Oct. 7, 2023, large swaths of Gaza have been leveled and most of the territory's 2 million people have been displaced. More than 63,000 Palestinians have died, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not say how many were fighters or civilians but that around half have been women and children. The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals. The U.N. and independent experts consider it the most reliable source on war casualties. Israel disputes the figures but has not provided its own. Israel says it makes every effort to avoid harming civilians and blames Hamas for their deaths because the militants fight in densely populated areas. It says Hamasis prolonging the warby not surrendering and releasing the hostages. Israel's supporters point out that its powerful military could kill far more Palestinians if it wanted to. Genocide scholars say there is no numerical threshold for the crime. The scholars group, founded in 1994, has previously held thatChina's treatment of the minority Muslim Uighursand Myanmar's brutal crackdown onRohingya Muslimsmeet the threshold for genocide. In 2006, the organization said statements by then-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in which he called for Israel to be "wiped off the map," had "genocidal intent" and called for urgent action to be taken. In July, two prominent Israeli rights groups — B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel — said their country is committing genocide in Gaza. The organizations do not reflect mainstream thinking in Israel, but it marked the first time that local Jewish-led organizations have made such accusations. International human rights groupshave also leveledthe allegation. Meanwhile, South Africa hasaccused Israel of breaching the Genocide Conventionat the International Court of Justice — an allegation Israel rejects. A final ruling could take years. The courtdoes not have a police force to implement its rulingsbut if a nation believes another member has failed to comply with an ICJ order, it can report that to the U.N. Security Council. The council has tools that range from sanctions to authorizing military action, but all actions require support from at least nine of 15 council nations and no veto by a permanent member — the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France. U.S.President Donald Trump, whose country is Israel's staunchest backer, has said he does not believe genocide is taking place.

"It was wonderful. It was very consoling and very encouraging and frankly a lot of fun." The meeting, which lasted about a half-hour, was officially announced by the Vatican in a sign that Leo wanted it made public. The audience was significant because it showed a strong sign of continuity with Francis, who more than any of Leo's predecessors worked to make the Catholic Church a more welcoming place for LGBTQ+ Catholics. From his 2013 quip, "Who am I to judge?" about a purportedly gay priest, to his decision to allow priests tobless same-sex couples, Francis distinguished himself with his message of welcome. During his 12-year papacy from 2013 to 2025, Francis met on several occasions with Martin and named him an advisor in the Vatican's communications department and a member of his big multi-year meeting on the future of the church. Still, Francis never changed church teaching saying homosexual acts are "intrinsically disordered." Leo's position on LGBTQ+ Catholics had beensomething of a question. Soon after he was elected in May, remarks surfaced from 2012 in which the future pope, then known as the Rev. Robert Prevost, criticized the "homosexual lifestyle" and the role of mass media in promoting acceptance of same-sex relationships that conflicted with Catholic doctrine. When he became a cardinal in 2023, Catholic News Service asked Prevost if his views had changed. Heacknowledged Francis' callfor a more inclusive church, saying Francis "made it very clear that he doesn't want people to be excluded simply on the basis of choices that they make, whether it be lifestyle, work, way to dress, or whatever." Prevost then underlined that doctrine had not changed. "But we are looking to be more welcoming and more open and to say all people are welcome in the church," he said. Martin, who knew Prevost from their time working together in the synod on the church's future, said he wasn't worried about Leo's views given Martin always had found him to be "a very open, welcoming, inclusive person." "But it's wonderful to hear this continuation," Martin said, adding that Leo told him his priorities are to work for peace and unity, citing in particular the conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and Myanmar. "But he also wanted to remind people that this is a church for 'todos, todos, totos,'" Martin said, quoting Francis' famous line in Spanish about how the church is open to everyone, todos. Martin helped found Outreach, aministry promoting LGBTQ+ acceptance, which will participate in a big Holy Year pilgrimage Friday and Saturday sponsored by Italian LGBTQ+ Catholic group "Jonathan's Tent." Significantly, the pilgrimage includes a Mass at the Jesuit church in Rome celebrated by the second-highest member of the Italian bishop's conference. The pilgrimage is not officially sponsored by the Vatican, but is listed on the Vatican's calendar of Holy Year events. Vatican officials say such a listing doesn't signify endorsement, but is merely a logistical help to those groups that wish to organize pilgrimages and walk through the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica. But the pilgrimage and Martin's audience nevertheless send a signal that is consistent with church teaching "that Jesus reaches out to people on the margins," Martin said. The message he received from Leo was "that if people were happy with Pope Francis' approach to LGBTQ Catholics, they're going to be happy with Pope Leo's approach. "When are we going back to South Carolina? I think that's going to depend on how things fall with production and other projects that we're working on right now," Todd, 57, shared. The couple, who originate from the coastal state, lived in the Atlanta suburbs for the first three seasons of their show. They later relocated to Nashville, eventually purchasing a mansion in Brentwood, Tenn. In November 2022, Todd and Julie, 52, werefound guilty of tax evasion and bank fraud among other crimes. Originally sentenced to a combined 19 years, the couple reported to prison in January 2023. Camilla was on a train to London's Paddington Station in the mid-1960s when the man next to her reached out and attempted to touch her, according to an excerpt from "Power and the Palace" by Valentine Low, a former royal correspondent for the Times of London. She told former Prime Minister Boris Johnson about the attack when he was mayor of London. "Camilla said, 'I did what my mother told me, I took my shoe off and whacked him in the nuts with the heel,''' Low told the BBC. "When she got to Paddington, this in a way is the crucial bit of the story, she found a man in uniform and told him what had happened and the man was arrested. … She did the responsible thing.'' The story drew widespread coverage in the British media on Monday, with headlines ranging from the Daily Telegraph's basic "Queen fought off sex attacker" to the Sun's tabloid-style "Camilla whacked groper in goolies." Whatever the approach, the tale is sure to add to Camilla's reputation as a no-nonsense woman who has brought a bit of grit to the royal family. The story was related to Low by one of Johnson's former aides, who believed the incident was the reason for Camilla's outspoken support for charities that work with victims of domestic violence. She has been reluctant to speak about it because her experience, while upsetting, was less serious than the attacks suffered by other women and girls, Low said. "She didn't want to draw attention to her at the expense of their experiences," he said. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the report. "Power and the Palace" will be published later this month. But the book, which details the relationship between the monarchy and Britain's political leaders, has already attracted attention with excerpts published in the Times of London that suggest the late Queen Elizabeth II opposed the U.K.'s decision to leave the European Union.

JHANG, Pakistan (AP) — Emergency workersin Pakistan's Punjab province used drones to find people stranded on rooftops by massive floods as the government expanded what it called its largest rescue operation, with more than 700,000 evacuated, officials said Monday. The Pakistan Meteorological Department warned of more heavy rain in Punjab's flood-hit districts and elsewhere in the country, where weeks of above-normal rainfall and the release of huge volumes of water from dams in neighboring India last week caused rivers to overflow into low-lying regions. In Multan and Jhang districts, residents on Monday waded through floodwaters carrying their belongings to roadsides and higher ground. They said they had waited for rescuers before crossing on their own nearly 5-foot (1 1/2-meter) -deep water to reach safety, while many others remained stranded. Since last week, rescuers, backed by the military and emergency services, have evacuated more than 700,000 people, said Irfan Ali Kathia, director general of the Punjab Disaster Management Authority. More than 500,000 farm animals were also moved to safety, he said. "We are handling an unprecedented situation, and we are responding to the country's biggest-ever floods by using the latest technology and all available resources to save lives," Kathia told The Associated Press. The Punjab government said drones were deployed this week inMultan, Jhangand other districts. "Our priority is to save lives and ensure a steady supply of essential items to survivors," Kathia said. The deluge has swamped Narowal, Sialkot and Kasur districts while entire villages have been submerged in Jhang and Multan. 'Everything is gone' On dusty roadside embankments, displaced families complained of being abandoned. "We have been destroyed. Everything is gone in the flood," said Haleema Bibi, 54, who fled her damaged home in Jhang with seven relatives. They now shelter under the open sky without tents or food. "Whatever we had to eat has nearly finished. You can see how miserably we are living," she told The Associated Press. Allah Ditta, a farmer from the same district, said he and his neighbors slept on plastic sheets and carts. "Rescuers came once by boat, but no one has brought us supplies. We keep looking to the road, hoping someone will come with help," he said. Authorities in Punjab say they had set up more than 1,000 relief camps, but government figures show that only about 36,550 of over 800,000 evacuees are housed in them. It is unclear where the vast majority were staying. Evacuations also took place in southern Sindh province, where Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah warned of a possible"super flood"of the Indus River if water levels top 900,000 cubic feet per second. Officials blame the catastrophic flooding on weeks of heavier-than-normal monsoon rains, compounded by cross-border watersreleased from India's swollen riversand dams last week. The Ravi, Chenab and Sutlej rivers rose simultaneously, inundating wide swaths of farmland and villages. India had alerted Pakistan about the water release, marking the rivals' first public diplomatic contact since a military crisis brought them to the brink of war in May. Punjab, home to some 150 million people and the country's main wheat-growing region, has recorded 33 flood-related deaths in 10 days — far fewer than the catastrophic 2022 floods — but damage is widespread. Pakistan's weather center said Punjab received 26.5% more monsoon rainfall between July 1 and Aug. 27 compared with the same period last year. Nationwide, at least 854 people have died in rain-related incidents since late June.
