"The Long Walk" treadmill screening to test viewers with their own long walk while eliminating slowpokes

Murray Close/Lionsgate A select group of moviegoers will get a chance to watch the newStephen KingadaptationThe Long Walktwo weeks early — but if they want to see how it ends, they'll have to make like the characters in the movie. At a screening slated for Saturday in Los Angeles, the normally plush seats will be replaced by treadmills, and any viewer whose pace falls below 3 miles per hour will be removed from the theater posthaste. The conditions are meant to simulate the plot of the dystopian thriller, which is set in a totalitarian version of the U.S. where 50 teen boys have been chosen to take part in a grim walking contest. The rules state that the first two times a contestant's pace is slower than 3 mph, they receive a warning; the third time, they're shot dead. The last man standing wins. The Culver Theater confirmed toEntertainment Weeklythat it will be hosting the treadmill-poweredLong Walkscreening, which it described as a private event. The venue declined to comment further, as did Lionsgate, the studio behind the film. AtSan Diego Comic-Conlast month, one of the film's stars, Tut Nyuot, toldEntertainment Weeklythat filming the movie was not an easy feat — physically or mentally. "We're walking, we're actually walking," said Nyuot, who plays the competitor Arthur. "It's something that I don't think has ever been done, just constantly on the move. So mentally, just getting into that headspace and just staying locked in and treating every scene as if it's new, 'cause we're doing it so many times. We filmed one scene a day." Nyuot's castmate Garrett Wareing, who plays fellow walker Stebbins, said he managed to record the number of steps he took on set. "I had my phone in my backpack the whole time, so I had to hide it, but I had my counter, right?" he said. "We were all walking — in addition to our crew members as well, who I want to shout out here — we were all walking eight to 15 miles a day. So what is it? 25,000 to 30,000 steps?" Based on King's 1979 novel of the same name, originally written under the moniker of Richard Bachman,The Long Walkalso starsMark Hamill,Judy Greer, Jordan Gonzalez, David Jonsson, andRoman Griffin Davis. The Long Walkis slated to arrive in theaters — with seats — Sept. 12. Read the original article onEntertainment Weekly
